DONAVAN John - 1867 - 17/08/1867 - Age 52 - Labourer. Cwm, Noel Powell’s Duffryn Steam Coal Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Killed by trucks.

DONCASTER Samuel - 1861 - 04/05/1861 - Age 21 - Collier. Ravenhead Bromilow, Haddock and Co., St. Helens, Lancashire. Falling out of the cage whilst ascending the pit.

DONELLY or DONNELLY William - 1860 - 02/03/1860. Burradon, Burradon, Durham. Explosion of gas. 76 killed. Left a wife and family.

DONKIN Charles - 1866 - 13/12/1866. Oaks, Messrs. Firth, Bamber and Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Explosions of gas. The total number of victims was 334 by the first explosion of the 12th December 1866 and 26 by the second explosion the following day. Total 360. Seventy five bodies were recovered prior to the shafts being closed forty five were recovered during the first twelve months after the shaft was reopened and seventy during the past years making the total 190. This deducted from 360 leaves 17 bodies still in the Colliery. It is remarkable that all but two have been identified.

DONKIN Robert - 1868 - 29/11/1868 - Age 21 Waggonwayman. Ryhope, Ryhope Coal Co., Sunderland, Durham. Crushed by tubs.

DONNA J.O. - 1863 - 04/05/1863 - Pikeman. Gospel Oak Grazebrooke and Aston Tipton. He made an effort to jump onto the cage when it was in motion. He grasped it and was thus drawn up the shaft 80-90 yards when he let go and fell and was killed Stafford.

DONOLLEY Charles - 1864 - 29/07/1864 - Age 35- Sinker. Foggs Andrew Knowles and Sons Darcey Lever Lancashire. A pole falling upon him from the top of the shaft. It slipped diagonally underneath, the landing waggon.

DONOLLY E. - 1866 - 10/07/1866 - Age 16 - Drawer. Kippsbyre Robertson, and Eddie Airdrie, Lanarkshire. Explosion. The lad had gone into a place standing ‘up-stoop’ with gas in it.

DONOUGHIE John - 1863 - 27/11/1863 - Age 35 - Collier. Graigston William Baird and Co., Cumnock, Ayrshire.  Explosion of firedamp.

DOODSON, John - 1862 - 17/04/1862 - Miner. Pendlebury, Andrew Knowles and Sons Pendlebury, Lancashire. Run over by a waggon in the 4-feet mine. Died in Manchester, Infirmary on the 21st.

DOOLAN Patrick - 1866 - 29/09/1866 - Age 50 Brusher. Blair Eglington Iron Co., Dalry Ayrshire.  Fell before loaded hutches and was run over by them.

DORE Able - 1869 - 10/06/1869 - Age 24. Ferndale, David Davies and Sons Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas from a blower. 53 killed.

DORMAND George - 1866 - 15/10/1866 - Age 58 - Chock Drawer. Seaham No.2 Earl Vane Seaham Durham. Fall of stone while drawing timber.

DORSETT H. - 1862 - 17/01/1862 - Age 14 - Boy. Madeley Wood (ironstone), John Austice and Co., Ironbridge, Shropshire. Burnt with gunpowder.

DOUGHTY J. - 1861 - 08/07/1861 - Age 40 - Loader. Wednesbury, Old P. Williams and Sons, Wednesbury, Staffordshire. Fell out of the skip whilst descending with several other persons.

DOWN Thomas - 1866 - 26/07/1866 - Age 26 - Collier. Bedwellty Tredegar Iron Co., Tredegar Monmouth. Hurt by fall of Coal. Died 26th. He was drawing his pillar back and was in the act of drawing down some top Coal when it suddenly fell and severely injured his spine.

DRUMMOND William - 1869 - 24/04/1869 - Age 60 - Waggoner. Holmes No.3 John Horne, Galston, Ayrshire.  Was run over by a waggon from a back-lye when shifting the switches near the screen.

DRYBURGH George - 1865 - 28/11/1865 - Age 66 - Labourer. Weymss, Mr Weymss, Fife. Crane ran amain and the handle struck him. He did not understand its action and threw it into ‘single instead of double power.’.

DUBIE D. - 1868 - 24/10/1868 - Age 15 - Pony driver. Whitehill Archibald Hood Dalkeith, Mid Lothian. Run over by tubs.

DUCAN George - 1865 - 30/08/1865 - Age 36 - Labourer. Pencaitland John Deans jnr. Haddington East Lothian Went to rescue George Duncan and fell besides him. Cairns worked at the same pit as Duncan and seeing him lying so near the surface he thought he was unwell and went down the ladder to assist him and was also suffocated. 2 killed.

DUCAN George - 1865 - 30/08/1865 - Age 52 - Engineman. Pencaitland John Deans jnr. Haddington East Lothian He went under the pit by means of a ladder to the top of the pumps, About - 18 feet from the surface and was suffocated by chokedamp issuing from an old Coal waste. 2 killed.

DUCEY P. - 1861 - 16/11/1861 - Age 35 - Loader. Tipton, J. Hopkins and Son Tipton, Staffordshire. Fall of Coal in the thick coal rib and pillar pit.

DUCKWORTH George - 1865 - 31/05/1865 - Miner. Hoddleston Joseph Place, Over Darwin, Lancashire. Injured by a shot which had misfired going off as he and others were drawing the stemming. Died in Bolton, Infirmary 11th June.

DUCKWORTH John - 1864 - 18/11/1864 - Age 13 - Waggoner. Waterside Adam, Bullough Darwen Lancashire. Stone falling from roof.

DUCKWORTH John - 1865 - 11/04/1865 - Age 14 - Waggoner. Dunkenhalgh Park, Trustees of the late Joseph Barnes Church Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp in Mountain mine, Dillhall pit. Gas had accumulated in rise workings became liberated as the water which kept it there was pumped out. It apparently fired at an open light which should have been prohibited when the water was drawn off, All suffocated by after damp. 4 killed.

DUDLEY, J. - 1864 - 25/08/1864 - Engineman. Brade’s Hall J Hackett, Oldbury, Worcestershire. Crushed by fly-wheel of the pumping engine. Injured 22nd. Died this day.

DUDLEY, J. - 1868 - 29/02/1868 - Age 16 - Bondsman. Bourne Hill Messrs. Nock Rowley Regis, Staffordshire. Suffocated by a fall of loose Coal and dirt caused by a bump which forced out the timber settings. 2 killed.

DUDLEY, John - 1866 - 26/11/1866 - Age 14 - Driver. Talk o’th’ Hill, North Stafford Co., Newcastle, Staffordshire. Fell form 7ft mouthing to 8ft.

DUERDEN James - 1866 28/05/1866 20 - Miner. Duckworth Thomas Simpson, and Co., Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire. Roof falling whilst cutting through a pillar.

DUFFIELD William - 1860 - 05/01/860 - Age 13 - Assistant Banksman. Conygre Earl of Dudley, Tipton, Staffordshire. Fell down shaft on 4th died 5th. No one saw him fall but he was found at the bottom.

DUNCAN Robert - 1864 - 31/01/1864 - Miner. Comrie (ironstone), Forth Iron Co., Perth. His foot got entangled in a chain which was being run out and his leg was taken off. He died 3 days later.
