Whilst barring down a “Brass’ (pyrites) in the ‘Big Vein’ and ton of Coal rolled over and as a prop was in the way he could not escape. The Coal was followed by a fall of ‘clod’ which broke his breast bone and wounded the lungs in such a manner that he died before midnight.

CLAYTON Richard - 1866 - 09/03/1866 – Age 42 - Collier. Tredegar, Tredegar Iron Co., Tredegar, Monmouth. Killed by a fall of Coal and rubbish in No.8 pit. The haulier had gone into the stall but not seeing Clayton there he returned. Another man went into the working place to talk to him but he could not find him so he went away. Finally his death was discovered about 9 pm so according to my calculations he must have been buried there ten and half hours. This shows clearly that more deputies should be employed in such a manner that no working place should remain hours and hours without inspection.

The place was well enough timbered but an undetected slip intervened and no doubt caused the fall.
