Coal was raised from 2 places in the shaft and he was ascending from the lower place and it was supposed he attempted to get out at the upper place without stopping the carriage.

COWAN John - 1868 - 14/02/1868 – Age 13 - Boy. No.3 Grougar Pit, Portland Iron Co., Galston, Ayrshire. Fall of stone at face.

COWARD Charles - 1860 - 28/08/1860. Wharncliffe Silkstone, Wharncliffe Silkstone Coal Co., Sheffield, Yorkshire. Falling down the shaft.

COWBURN J - 1868 - 01/02/1868 – Age 19. Walsh, Farnley Iron Co., Leeds, Yorkshire. Chimney blown down in gale fell on them whilst sitting in a cabin at the pit. 2 killed.

COWBURN R. - 1862 - 05/09/1862 – Age 16 - Waggoner. How Bridge, John Fletcher and others, Atherton, Lancashire. Crushed by a waggon on the jig-brow chain breaking in 6-Feet mine. Died 7th.

COWELL Edward - 1861 - 10/01/1861 – Age 12 - Driver. North Hetton, Hetton Coal Co., Hetton, Durham. Fell from main coal mouthing to Hutton Seam.

COWELL William - 1866 - 12/01/1866 – Age 17 - Putter. Pelton, Lord Dunsany and Brothers, Chester-le-Street, Durham. Killed by tubs in engine plane, riding contrary to orders and to a printed notice arising from Collision. 5 killed.

COWEY Robert - 1867 - 08/03/1867 - Age 37 - Hewer. Shotton (Harvey) Haswell Coal and Coke Co., Haswell Durham. Fall of stone.

COWHERD William - 1866 - 04/09/1866 – Age 14 – Carting Boy. Timsbury, Timsbury Coal Co., Timsbury Somerset. By pressure a piece of Coal burst off from the face of ‘long work’ in the Sliving vein in the upper Coneygre pit and killed him. If the gob had been closer up it would not have received so much pressure and the Coal would not have flown at him like a cannonball.

COWPER Thurston - 1869 - 23/11/1869 – Age 36 – Dayman. Park Hall, Arley Main Co., Blackrod, Lancashire. Roof falling as he was drawing props.

COX B. - 1864 - 05/02/1864 - Bandsman. Capponfield, Chillington Co., Bilston, Staffordshire. Fall of roof rock in the new mine Coal. Brought about through disobedience to orders and violation of 33 special rule.

COX George - 1863 - 11/04/1863 – Age 28 - Sinker. Old Mills, Hill Evans and Co., Paulton, Somerset. Got onto a scaffold whilst a ‘shide’ was being lowered and he fell 16 yards down the pit and was killed.

COX J - 1864 - 23/04/1864 - Bandsman. Cooper’s Bank, SG Blackwell and Co., Dudley, Worcestershire. Fall of Coal from roof in thick Coal. Rib and pillar pit (accidental). 2 Killed.

COX James - 1867 - 13/06/1867 – Age 47 - Pitman. Coedcae Colliery, Coedcae Coal Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Fell down shaft.

COX James - 1867 - 18/06/1867 – Age 15 – Horse Boy. Bretby, Earl of Chesterfield, Burton-on-Trent, Derbyshire. Run over.

COX James - 1868 - 23/10/1868 – Age 35 - Collier. Bute, Merthyr Marquis of Bute, Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Killed by fall of stone.

COX W - 1863 - 22/01/1863 - Collier. Brades S and J Hunt, Oldbury, Worcestershire. Fall of coal in thick coal rib and pillar pit occasioned by 2 slips.

CRADDOCK E. - 1861 - 09/01/1861 - Collier. Brownhills, William Harrison, Walsall, Staffordshire. Suffocated with smoke from a fire which originated in an airway in the ‘Deep Coal’ workings of an adjoining pit. 6 killed.

CRANE Joseph - 1866 - 30/05/1866 – Age 44- Sinker. South Liberty, Ashton Vale Co., Ltd., Bedminster, Somerset. They were walling a sinking pit when the end of one of the scaffold supports (bars as they are called here) slipped out and the half-moon tipped to one side and the men fell to the bottom. 2 killed.
