SHERWOOD E. - 1861 - 24/01/1861 – Age 23 - Collier. Herbert’s Park, David Jones, Bilston, Staffordshire. Injured on the 27th by a piece of brick falling down the shaft whilst stepping into the ‘tackled skip’ which was provided with a suitable cover. Died this day.

SHERWOOD J - 1868 - 09/03/1868 – Age 15 – Collier Boy. Coneygree, Earl of Dudley, Dudley, Worcestershire. Suffocated by fall of slack in gateroad owing to the timber setting reeling out.

SHERWOOD S. - 1869 - 11/02/1869 – Age 14 - Hooker-on. Tipton Green, J Whale, Tipton, Staffordshire. Crushed by descending cage whilst improperly standing in pit shaft.

SHEVILLE John - 1867 - 25/02/1867 – Age 70 - Shifter. Houghton, Earl of Durham, Fencehouses, Durham. Crushed by set of tubs on engine plane.

SHIELDS John (survivor) - 1862 - 22/11/1862 – Backoverman. Walker, NG Lambert and Co., Durham. Explosion of gas 16 killed.

SHILTON William - 1865 - 07/02/1865 – Age 13 - Boy. Kettlebrook, Executors of Dumalo, Tamworth, Staffordshire. Run over on incline.

SHIMM James - 1869 - 09/10/1869 – Age 50 - Labourer. Newbattle, Marquis of Lothian, Dalkeith, Mid Lothian. While putting crane in single gear with weight on, it overpowered six men. 2 killed.

SHIPLEY Henry - 1869 - 06/04/1869 – Age 21 - Collier. Menses Cross, Tetley and Co., Ashton, Wigan, Lancashire. Explosion of gas.

SHIPLEY Robert - 1860 - 24/01/1860 – Manager. Cyging, Thomas Walters, Swansea, Glamorgan. Banksman pushed tram into shaft whilst deceased were descending. Coroner’s jury brought in verdict of manslaughter against banksman. 2 killed. Son, of manager.

SHIPLEY Thomas - 1860 - 24/01/1860 – Age 55 – Manager. Cyging, Thomas Walters, Swansea, Glamorgan. Banksman pushed tram into shaft whilst deceased were descending. Coroner’s jury brought in verdict of manslaughter against banksman. 2 killed.

SHIPPERBOTTOM James - 1869 - 01/12/1869 – Age 17 - Waggoner. Tonge, Jethro Scowcroft, Bolton, Lancashire. Burned by explosion of firedamp. A little gas accumulated in a slide place where none had been seen before and into which the boy went to eat his supper.

SHONE John - 1865 - 13/03/1865 - Collier. Broomfield, Broomfield Colliery Co., Mold, Flint. Explosion.

SHORE John - 1866 - 14/06/1866. Dukinfield, FDP Astley, Ashton-under-Lyne, Cheshire. Explosion of firedamp. 38 killed.

SHORE John William - 1866 - 13/12/1866. Oaks, Messrs. Firth, Bamber and Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Explosions of gas. The total number of victims was 334 by the first explosion of the 12th December 1866 and 26 by the second explosion the following day. Total 360. Seventy five bodies were recovered prior to the shafts being closed forty five were recovered during the first twelve months after the shaft was reopened and seventy during the past years making the total 190. This deducted from 360 leaves 17 bodies still in the Colliery. It is remarkable that all but two have been identified.

SHORT Aaron - 1866 - 07/09/1866 – Age 17 - Collier. Risca, TW Rhodes, Risca, Monmouth. The Black vein pit is worked by a very long engine bank and it is against the rules to ride on trams down this. The trams flew off the metals and they were crushed to death under them. 2 killed.

SHORT H. - 1866 - 17/11/1866 - Hewer. Fenham, Bainbridge and Co., Newcastle, Northumberland. Fall of stone.

SHORT James - 1867 - 27/05/1867 – Age 40 - Collier. Cambusnethan, John Sneddon, Wishaw, Lanarkshire. These men were allowed to examine the firedamp in their own place, they went too far before using the Davy lamp. No proceedings were taken. The firemen specially appointed should have examined the places before the men enter. 2 killed.

SHORT Matthew - 1863 - 06/03/1863 – Age 13 – Trapper. Coxlodge, Coxlodge, Northumberland. Explosion of gas. 26 killed.

SHORT Thomas - 1868 - 19/07/1868 – Age 41 - Collier. Rainford, Rainford Coal Co., St. Helens, Lancashire. Fall of Coal.

SHORT Thomas - 1868 - 21/03/1868 – Age 30 - Collier. Blaendare, Blaendare Co., Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. Coal suddenly fell and killed him on the spot.

SHOTTON Frank - 1866 - 12/01/1866 – Age 12 - Driver. Pelton, Lord Dunsany and Bros., Chester-le-Street, Durham. Collision of tubs while riding out. 5 killed.

SHUTTLEWORTH John - 1866 - 01/11/1866 – Age 23 - Hooker-on. Westleigh, James Diggle, Westleigh, Lancashire. A loaded waggon which he had sent up the engine brow becoming uncoupled ran back and crushed him at the hooking-on place.

SHUTTLEWORTH Samuel - 1869 - 20/08/1869 – Age 64 - Miner. Great Lever, Earl of Bradford, Great Lever, Lancashire. Roof coal falling.

SIDDALL Benjamin - 1864 - 24/04/1864. Doleswood, Drighlington Coal Co., Leeds, Yorkshire. Explosion of firedamp.

SIDDON William - 1869 - 22/03/1869 – Age 46 – Screenman. Burnhope, Sowerby and Fletcher, Lanchester, Durham. Run over by 3 empty waggons.

SILVERS C. - 1861 - 14/02/1861 – Age 28 - Loader. Tividale, Bagnall and Jesson, Tipton, Staffordshire. Fall of coal and slack in the ‘thick coal’ causing suffocation.

SILVERS T. - 1862 - 02/12/1862 - Deputy. Bourne, Hill Nock, Wood and Nock, Dudley, Worcestershire. Fall of coal. Injured. Died this day.

SIMKINS E. - 1862 - 08/02/1862 - Pikeman. Rounds Green, Bennitt and Taylor Oldbury, Worcestershire. Fall of coal in a thick rib and pillar pit. He had neglected to timber as required by pepcial rule 28 the observance of which might have saved his life.

SIMKISS G. - 1861 - 14/06/1861 – Age 46 - Pikeman. Bumble Hole, T and J Badger, Dudley, Worcestershire. Fall of coal in an old thick coal rib and pillar pit. He knocked down the timber props which had been set for his protection and thus lost his life.

SIMM Peter - 1868 - 26/12/1868 – Age 15 - Pony driver. Queen Colliery, Richard Evans and Sons, Haydock, St. Helens, Lancashire. Explosion of gas 26 killed.

SIMM Peter - 1869 - 15/11/1869 – Age 16 - Drawer. Low Hall, Moss Hall Coal Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Explosion of gas. 27 killed.

SIMM Robert - 1869 - 05/07/1869 – Age 20 - Hewer. Shield Row, Louisa David Burn Gateshead, Durham. Fall of stone.

SIMM Samuel - 1869 - 15/11/1869 - Drawer. Low Hall, Moss Hall Coal Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Explosion of gas. 27 killed.

SIMMONS John - 1862 - 15/04/1862 – Age 27 - Collier. Clandown, Clandown Coal Co., Radstock, Somerset. Fall of roof in his working place.

SIMMONS or SYMONDS Luke - 1865 - 27/04/1865 – Age 40 - Collier. Yate Long, Nowell and Co., Gloucester. By the fracture of an iron hook and the consequent fall of the ‘bye rope’ down the shaft. Anthony Wherrett was killed in the ascending cage by the rope and chain bulging the bonnet. Luke Simmons by reason, of the same hook fracture lost his life on the slope before he could reach a place of refuge. This was due to the shaft accident although death took place on the underground incline. 2 killed.

SIMMS J. - 1863 - 19/01/1863 – Age 14 - Collier. Fly Hill (ironstone), New British Iron Co., Rowley Regis, Staffordshire. Fell out of the skip whilst ascending.

SIMMS John - 1865 - 01/03/1865 – Age 34 - Collier. Clough Hall, Kinnersley and Co., Newcastle, Staffordshire. Explosion of firedamp. 5 killed 2 injured.

SIMMS S. - 1862 - 04/02/1862 – Age 57 - Collier. Muxton, Lilleshall Co., Wellington, Shropshire. Explosion of firedamp.

SIMMS Thomas - 1869 - 18/06/1869 – Age 23 - Deputy. Hartshay, Butterley Co., Ripley Derbyshire. Fall of bind.

SIMON Henry - 1862 - 20/08/1862 – Age 31 - Collier. Pencoed Simms, Neville and Co., Llanelly, Carmarthen. Fall of Coal.

SIMONS William - 1866 - 16/10/1866 – Age 25 - Banksman. Werfa Heath, Evans and Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fell from truck on surface incline plane.

SIMPKIN Isaac - 1864 - 01/07/1864 – Age 12 - Drawer. Blackeyhurst, Samuel Stock, St. Helens, Lancashire. A collision of the cages in the pit whilst they were descending. It was afterwards discovered that one of the cages had accidentally got out of the guide rods. 6 killed.

SIMPSON, J. - 1861 - 12/09/1861 – Age 40 - Loader. Newbury Lane, Haines and Davies Oldbury, Worcestershire. Fall of coal in the thick coal about 50cwt. It burst out of the solid. Caused by a ‘bump’ or subsidence in the strata.

SIXSMITH Andrew - 1864 - 03/06/1864 – Age 29 - Fireman. Hulton, Hulton Colliery Co., Over Hulton, Lancashire. Suffocated by fired-damp in the Cannel mine at No.1 Park pit. The gas being explosive he went into the place in the dark.

SKELDON M. - 1865 - 18/05/1865 - Pikeman. Holt, S Bennitt, Rowley Regis, Staffordshire. Fall of coal in thick coal top working.

SKELDON S. - 1864 - 15/12/1864 – Age 30 - Hooker-on. Moxley (ironstone), S Groucutt, Bilston, Staffordshire. Struck by a piece of clod which fell from an ascending skip. He was improperly standing in the bottom of the shaft.

SKELDON W. - 1865 - 26/04/1865 – Age 50 - Pikeman. Lower Coneygre, Earl of Dudley, Tipton, Staffordshire. Smothered in a gateroad whilst removing timber.

SKIDMORE George - 1860 - 01/12/1860 – Age 35. Black Vein, Risca Iron and Coal Co. Risca, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp. This lamenatble calamity was occasioned by a sudden outburst of gas on, most probably, a defective lamp. 142 persons, killed.

SKIDMORE J. - 1867 - 17/12/1867 – Age 17 - Collier. Wallows, Earl of Dudley, Kingswinsford, Staffordshire. Fall of cage while ascending.

SKIDMORE O - 1869 - 13/03/1869 – Age 22 - Pikeman. Wallows, Earl of Dudley, Brierley Hill, Staffordshire. Fall of slipper in thick coal.

SKIDMORE S. - 1864 - 02/11/1864 - Collier. Russel’s Hall, Molland and Co., Dudley, Worcestershire. Fall of coal in thick coal. 2 killed.

SKIN David - 1865 - 20/10/1865 – Age 20 - Hitcher. Cwm Mawr, John Harris, Llanelly, Carmarthen. A piece of coal fell from part way up the shaft on his head.

SKITT T. - 1864 - 20/06/1874 – Age 43 - Miner. Madeley Wood (ironstone), John Anstice and Co., Wellington, Shropshire. Fall of roof.

SLACKS E. - 1861 - 05/04/1861 – Age 16 - Driver. Madeley Court (ironstone), W.O. Foster, Newcastle, Staffordshire. Kicked by a horse in the workings.

SLADE H. - 1862 - 09/02/1862 – Age 26 - Loader. Ramrod Hall, Earl of Dudley, Oldbury, Worcestershire. A large piece of coal accidentally tumbling against him and injured his leg 5th. Died this day. Thick coal pit.

SLADEN R. - 1862 - 29/09/1862 – Age 12 - Waggoner. Boarshaw Wild, Haigh and Co., Middleton, Lancashire. Caught by the winding drum on the jig brow.

SLATER Arthur - 1867 - 28/08/1867 - Miner. Lords Field, Lords Field Co., Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire. Crushed by tub waggon which drove the post away and came against him in the face of the downbrow.

Seventy five bodies were recovered prior to the shafts being closed forty five were recovered during the first twelve months after the shaft was reopened and seventy during the past years making the total 190. This deducted from 360 leaves 17 bodies still in the Colliery. It is remarkable that all but two have been identified.

SLIMM J. - 1863 - 31/07/1863 – Age 20 - Bondsman. Union, P Williams and Co., West Bromwich, Staffordshire. A sudden slip of the old goaf took place and smothered him.

Provision was made at this pit with a view to prevent such an accident which however he neglected and lost his life.

SMITH G. - 1862 - 19/04/1862 – Age 22 - Engineer. Wolverhampton, Aston and Shaw, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. He was engaged doing repairs to the drum of the winding gear. He gave directions for the machinery to be put in motion when he accidentally fell between the toothed wheels and was crushed to death. The sad result of his own recklessness and indifference to danger.

SMITH J - 1866 - 24/03/1866 – Age 50 – Chartermaster. Spring Vale, Spring Vale Colliery Co., Bilston, Staffordshire. Pushed tub into pit and followed it. He neglected to provide means to prevent such an accident Contrary to special rule 20.

SMITH J. - 1860 - 05/12/1860 – Age 37 - Miner. Hollingwood, R. Barrow, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Explosion of gunpowder through Orwin carelessly using it. 3 killed.

SMITH J. - 1860 - 19/07/1860 – Age 41 - Collier. Baxenden Hargreaves, Ashworth and Co., Baxenden, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp in Cat Hole pit. Died 24th. The deceased and John Entwistle seemed to be working in the ordinary way, when he heard a great noise suddenly, like the report of an explosion. He went to the place where the noise had Come from and found the deceased upon his knees. He asked him to find his clothes, he appeared to be burnt. The Coroner said there was no doubt, but the deceased met his death through his own carelessness, but he thought Henry Pilkington was to be blamed for not stopping the work in that portion of the pit where he discovered sulphur. But this would not influence their verdict and he thought that they could return nothing else other than accidental death. (Accrington, Times).

SMITH John - 1867 - 07/01/1867 – Age 35 - Collier. Pather, Coltness Iron Co., Coltness, Lanarkshire. Explosion of firedamp on a Monday morning when the furnace had been out for 40 hours. MacNeil took Smith with him to examine the pit with both safety lamps and naked lights. The gas ignited at the naked light and killed them both. The Fireman neglected the 22nd and 27th Special Rules of the colliery. 2 killed.

SMITH John - 1867 - 31/05/1867 – Age 33 - Hewer. Washington, Durham. Cage accident. 10 killed. Wife and seven children.

SMITH John - 1868 - 08/06/1868 - Fireman. Kelloe East, South Hetton Coal Co., Coxhoe, Durham. Boiler explosion. 2 killed.

SMITH John - 1868 - 09/04/1868 – Age 25 - Hewer. Coxhoe, Durham.

SMITH John - 1868 - 18/06/1868 – Age 72, Screener, Broughton Moor, John Harris, Maryport, Cumberland. Run over by waggons.

SMITH John - 1868 - 20/05/1868 – Age 18 - Collier. Sheepbridge, Sheepbridge Co. Ltd., Sheepbridge, Derbyshire. Fall of roof.

SMITH John - 1869 - 08/01/1869 – Age 57 Rainford, Rainford Colliery Co., St. Helens, Lancashire. The mine having become ignited by the heat of the furnace the men were trying to extinguish it with water when the flame backed upon them and burned them so severely that they died from the effects thereof. 7 killed.
