BRUCLET Barnard - 1860 - 04/08/1860 - Collier. Omoa Iron Works, Robert Stewart, Hamilton, Fife. Fall of Coal at face of working.

BRUGES William - 1861 - 09/02/1861 – Age 23 - Collier. Middle Countess of Waldegrave, Radstock, Somerset. Fall of a mass of stone in the horse road from over the Coal weighing 19 or 20 tons. 2 killed.

BRUNDRED John - 1869 - 23/12/1869 – Age 13 - Boy. Lawton, Bidder and Elliott, Newcastle, Staffordshire. Fall of Coal.

BRUNDRETT Thomas - 1867 - 30/05/1867 – Age 26 - Miner. Mesne, Lea Peter Nightingale and Co., Worsley, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp in Rams 7ft mine. A new cut through was made the evening before but being only a small hole and the flexible tubing which had been used instead of brattice being stowed in the previous cut through there was not enough room for the air which caused the ventilation being overpowered during the night. The Fireman and the miners also appeared were going to work in the morning and one of them, was found in advance instead of the Fireman making the inspection with a lamp. 7 killed.

BRUNT Thomas - 1861 - 11/06/1861 – Age 32 - Miner. Clay Cross, William Jackson and Partners, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Suffocated in the No.2 black shale pit in Consequence of an inundation of water from old workings. Sealed him up for 22 days. 23 killed.

BRUXTON B. - 1863 - 27/09/1863 - Sinker. Ireland Green, W Gilbert and Co., West Bromwich, Staffordshire. Overwinding at pumping pit.

BRYAN J. - 1863 - 03/01/1863 – Age 19 - Pikeman. Woodside, Cochrane and Co., Dudley, Worcestershire. Fall of Coal in thick Coal. He was cutting out a spurn with a pick when he ought to have used a pricker and thus saved his life.

BRYAN John - 1867 - 15/05/1867 – Age 13 - Driver. Haswell, Haswell Coal and Co., Haswell Durham. Crushed between top of tub and crown tree.

BRYAN M. - 1864 - 11/05/1864 – Age 16 - Collier. New Parkfield, Parkfield Co., Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. Fall of Coal in new mine Coal.

BRYANT Abraham - 1863 - 20/05/1863 – Age 21 - Miner. Cwmburgwm (ironstone), Ebbw Vale Co., Abersychan, Monmouth. Fall of stone caused by a slip not previously seen.

BRYANT Isaac - 1864 - 28/11/1864 – Age 31 - Collier. Kingswood, Kingswood Coal Co., Kingswood, Gloucester. They with 4 others went down to commence work in a close man hudge. Through Derangement of the indicator and absence of proper signals they went three or four feet too slow, Bryant and Poole were either pushed out of the hudge or struggled themselves out and were drowned. The other 4 remained in and escaped. 2 killed.

BRYANT Job - 1863 - 24/07/1863 – Age 19 - Carting Boy. Tyning, Countess of Waldergrave, Radstock, Somerset. Sudden fall of bell mould.

BRYANT Morris - 1866 - 02/04/1866 – Age 15 - Haulier. Great Western, Great Western Coal Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Killed by trams on the surface.

BRYANT Moses - 1860 - 01/12/1860 – Age 49. Black Vein, Risca Iron and Coal Co., Risca, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp. This lamenatble calamity was occasioned by a sudden outburst of gas on most probably, a defective lamp. 142 persons, killed.

BRYCE James - 1867 - 15/04/1867 – Overman. Haughhead, Merry and Cunninghame, Hamilton, Lanarkshire. Explosion of firedamp. Bryce and McKie went down the pit to clear some firedamp thinking all the men were out but Campbell was in his place which got the return air of this drift and it is supposed the firedamp ignited at his naked lamp and killed them all. 3 killed.

BUCHAN James - 1869 - 09/10/1869 – Age 50 - Labourer. Newbattle, Marquis of Lothian, Dalkeith, Mid Lothian. While putting crane in single gear with weight on, it overpowered six men. 2 killed.

BULLEN Thomas - 1869 - 08/01/1869 – Age 34 Rainford, Rainford Colliery Co., St. Helens, Lancashire. The mine having become ignited by the heat of the furnace the men were trying to extinguish it with water when the flame backed upon them and burned them so severely that they died from the effects thereof. 7 killed.

BURTON, William - 1863 - 28/07/1863 - Boy. Eccleshill, Eccleshill Coal Co., Leeds, Yorkshire. Breaking of a round hempen pit rope. 2 killed.

BURY Edward (injured) - 1862 - 17/06/1862 - Sinker. Shorey Bank, Potters and Co., Over Darwin, Lancashire. Powder from a blast exploding in the hole being rammed. 3 others were hurt and 3 by a similar explosion on the 12thA charge had been prepared by Ramsden and Youd of about 2 lb. of blasting powder, and they were engaged in stemming it upon the hole previously prepared for it. Whilst Redmayne and Riley were similarly employed, the odd man, Bury, was attending to the sending up of the tubs. Youd was holding the rammer, while Ramsden was striking with his hammer for him. When the rammer, as in the case of the accident last week came into Contact with the hard rock, it struck fire, igniting the fuse and exploding the shot, scattering large pieces on all sides. Youd, a powerful man, six feet two inches in height, was killed on the spot, his hands, arms and legs being literally shattered to pieces, and his face blackened dreadfully. Bury was badly bruised about the legs and chest and Redmayne was severely injured. Riley and Ramsden were badly bruised and scorched on the arms, head and legs. The jury without leaving their seats returned a verdict of "Accidental death". (Blackburn Times,).

BUSBY James - 1862 - 27/02/1862 – Age 50 - Collier. Netherfield, J and J Robertson, Glasgow, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof.

BUSH Fk. - 1867 - 28/03/1867 – Age 56 - Miner. Red Vein (ironstone), Levick and Simpson, Blaina, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp. He put his candle up into a hole in the top over timbers to look for his victuals bag and lit gas and burned himself and his Companions but he alone died. It was not a travelling road and he should have not hung his bag there.

BUSH George - 1863 - 18/12/1863 – Age 40 - Collier. Golden Valley, Bitton, Gloucester. Drawn over the pulley and fell down the pit more than 300 yards and dreadfully mangled. The engineman was in the habit of winding by the indicator but on this dark morning it became deranged and deceived him with regard to the position of the load in the shaft. 2 killed.

BUSHELL William - 1867 - 17/07/1867 – Age 45 - Engineer. Lawton, Bidder and Elliot, Newcastle, Staffordshire. Crushed by Coal waggon on incline.

BUTIN Andrew snr. - 1863 - 12/08/1863 – Age 50 - Bottomer Struthers, John Gilmour and Co., Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. By falling from mid working to the bottom of the shaft.

BUTLER Ann - 1866 - 09/11/1866 – Oiler. Gadlys Colliery, Gadlys Iron Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fell before trams at surface. Female.

BUTLER E. - 1862 - 19/01/1862 – Age 35 - Loader. Rounds Green, Bennitt and Taylor, Oldbury, Worcestershire. Fall of Coal in thick Coal.

BUTLER J. - 1862 - 24/11/1862 – Age 21 – Bondsman, Havacre, B Gibbons jnr., Bilston, Staffordshire. Fell down pit shaft. Had neglected to fasten the runner or platform with the usual catch which Cost him his life. He was unaccustomed to banking.

BUTLER M - 1868 - 28/08/1868 – Age 40 – Bondsman. Salt Well, Earl of Dudley, Dudley, Worcestershire. Fall of a very small piece of white Coal in thick Coal pit. The injury seemed slight as he walked most of the way home but with a short distance of his home he fell down insensible and expired the same day.

BUTLER Samuel - 1860 - 05/05/1860 – Age 73 - Collier. Easton Pit, Kingswood, Gloucester. Was killed by a fall of stone.

BUTLER Thomas - 1867 - 19/01/1867 – Age 62 - Collier. Dinas Coffin and Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Fall of roof.

BUTLER William - 1860 - 17/03/1860 – Age 14 - Surface Trammer. Dean’s Lane, Bedminster Co., Bedminster, Somerset. Riding on the hudge down a steep part of the tip he came into Contact with a loaded one. He should not have been on the hudge at all.

BUTTERFIELD J. - 1868 - 31/01/1868 – Age 19 - Collier. Swan Lane, Edward Johnson, Hindley Green, Lancashire. Falling when part way down the shaft.

BUTTERWORTH John - 1867 - 10/09/1867 - Miner. Bradford, Bradford Co., Manchester, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp. Died 6th. No inquest held death being attributed to inflammation of the lungs but as it supervened upon the burning, attention was called to the matter with the view of preventing such an irregularity in the future.

BUTTON Arthur - 1869 - 22/10/1869 – Age 22. Newbury, Westbury Iron Co., Newbury, Somerset. Explosion of firedamp. 11 killed. At half past six in the morning there was an explosion at Newbury, Colliery, five miles from Frome, in which nine persons, were killed and four others were so severely injured that scarcely any hopes were entertained of their recovery. The men were going down for the day shift. The first warning that anything was wrong was a loud report from underground which could be heard for a mile and then a large amount of dense smoke appeared out of the upcast shaft. The pit head was soon covered by women and children crying and exhibiting the deepest grief. The bailiff, Mr Bake and the lampman descended the downcast shaft and proceeded in the direction of the cupola. They found the gas had ignited near a standing pillar of Coal. They found a Jacket belonging to one of the deceased in which there was a pipe and a quantity of tobacco. Left a wife and child.

BUTTON Eli - 1863 - 21/12/1863 – Age 14 - Collier. Vobster, Vobster Coal Co., Frome, Somerset. The place was well timbered and a heavy fall of Coal broke over and killed him.

BUTTON Mark - 1868 - 31/08/1868 – Age 30 - Collier. Old Vobster, Stephen Steeds and Co., Bath Somerset. Explosion of firedamp. 3 others burnt. He died 13th Sept. His widow, who had five children, received £5 from "The fund" on 9th Jan. 1869.

BUTTON Peter - 1861 - 01/06/1861 – Age 12 - Drawer. Kirkless Hall, Kirkless Hall Coal Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Fall of roof.

BUXTON Frederick - 1868 - 23/07/1868 – Age 32 - Collier. High Park, Barber Walker and Co., Eastwood, Nottinghamshire. Fall of roof.

BUXTON John - 1861 - 11/06/1861 – Age 38 - Miner. Clay Cross, William Jackson and Partners, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Suffocated in the No.2 black shale pit in consequence of an inundation of water from old workings. Sealed him up for
22 days. 23 killed.

BUXTON Thomas jnr. - 1866 - 25/10/1866 – Age 25 - Sinker. Dowlais (ironstone), Guest and Co., Merthyr, Glamorgan. Fell down air pit.

BYEWATER J - 1868 - 19/12/1868 – Age 11 – Coal sorter. Howden, Clough Asquith Bros. and Co., Leeds, Yorkshire. - Run over by waggon.

BYRHAM John - 1869 - 29/12/1869 – Age 15 - Drawer. Moor, Wigan Coal and Iron Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Fall of roof in cannel mine.

BYROM Thomas - 1865 - 06/04/1865 – Age 28 - Collier. Pewfall, Richard Evans and Co., Haydock, St. Helens, Lancashire. Fall of roof in Main Delf mine.

BYTHEWAY E. - 1868 - 23/10/1868 – Age 29 - Pikeman. Shut End, New Messrs. Cochrane, Dudley, Worcestershire. Injured by fall of Coal in thick Coal pit 10th. Died this day.
