BRACE Mark - 1860 - 01/12/1860. Black Vein, Risca Iron and Coal Co., Risca, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp. This lamentable calamity was occasioned by a sudden outburst of gas on most probably, a defective lamp. 142 persons, killed.

BRADBURY Charles - 1867 - 07/10/1867 – Age 15 - Waggoner. Moston, Executors of John Stanley, Manchester, Lancashire. Coal falling on him as - Miner. Has not set sprags.

BRADBURY William - 1869 - 02/06/1869 – Age 61 - Collier. Renishaw Park, J and G Wells, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Fall of roof (Renishaw, Park pit).

BRADDOCK John - 1863 - 04/03/1863 – Age 40 - Miner. Whitwick, John Whetstone, Leicestershire. Leicestershire. Fall of roof. 2 killed.

BRADLEY E - 1868 - 27/03/1868 – Age 48- Sinker. Moorgreen, Barber Walker and Co., Eastwood, Nottinghamshire. Fall of stone in sinking shaft.

BRADLEY Edward - 1866 - 13/12/1866. Oaks, Messrs. Firth, Bamber and Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Explosions of gas. The total number of victims was 334 by the first explosion of the 12th December 1866 and 26 by the second explosion the following day. Total 360. Seventy five bodies were recovered prior to the shafts being closed forty five were recovered during the first twelve months after the shaft was reopened and seventy during the past years making the total 190. This deducted from 360 leaves 17 bodies still in the Colliery. It is remarkable that all but two have been identified.

BRADLEY F. - 1861 - 11/06/1861 – Age 35 - Miner. Clay Cross, William Jackson, and Partners, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Suffocated in the No.2 black shale pit in consequence of an inundation of water from old workings. Sealed him up for 22 days. 23 killed.

BRADLEY George - 1867 - 03/07/1867 – Age 16 - Collier. Mexbro, Butterley Iron Co., Alfreton, Derbyshire. Fall of roof.

BRADLEY H. - 1862 - 13/08/1862 – Age 27 - Carpenter. Hulton, Hulton Colliery Co., Hulton, Lancashire. Falling from an old pit brow when he was taking down a coal riddle. Died 6th.

BRADLEY Henry - 1869 - 04/12/1869 – Age 33 - Fireman. Waterloo, Plaskynaston Coal Co., Ruabon, Denbigh. Falling out of cage while ascending.

BRADLEY J. - 1869 - 18/02/1869 – Age 19 - Pikeman. Netherton, Messrs. Grazebrook, Dudley, Worcestershire. Fall of Coal in thick Coal pit whilst undercutting a nob or small pillar, the result of a bump.

BRADLEY John - 1863 - 13/01/1863 – Age 48 – Keeper. St. Helens, Joseph Pease and Co., Auckland, Durham. Fell off erections.

BRADLEY W. - 1862 - 14/02/1862 – Age 33 - Miner. Brinsop Hall, William Woods and Son, West Houghton, Lancashire. Crushed by the engine being started as he was getting into the cage to ascend the shaft.

BRADSHAW George - 1864 - 13/06/1864. Hostingley, Joshua Ingham, Dewsbury Yorkshire. Fall of roof in the mine.

BRADSHAW Samuel - 1864 - 11/11/1864 – Age 13 - Horsedriver. Oakthorpe, Marquis of Hastings, Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire. Run over by trams.

BRADSHAW W - 1865 - 12/09/1865 - Collier. California, Kirkless Hall Coal and Iron Co., Aspull, Wigan, Lancashire. The rope breaking by slipping off the drum as they were ascending the pit. It was a Conical or compensating drum without grooves. 8 killed.

BRADY E - 1865 - 08/02/1865 – Age 26 - Waggoner. Old Field, WH Sparrow and Son, Longton, Staffordshire. Crushed by waggons.

BRADY Thomas - 1865 - 27/02/1865 – Age 27 - Hewer. Brandon Strakers and Love, Durham. Crushed under the cage at the bottom of the shaft.

BRAEN Timothy - 1867 - 10/09/1867 – Age 22 - Collier. Bedwellty, Tredegar Iron Co., Tredegar, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp.

BRAEN Timothy - 1867 - 10/09/1867 – Age 22 - Collier. Haywood, William Crawshay, Cinderford, Somerset. Killed by fall of roof.

BRAILSFORD J. - 1861 - 26/10/1861 – Age 51 - Banksman. Owl Coates, Messrs. Galloway, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Falling down the shaft.

BRAILSFORD John - 1864 - 23/10/1864. Park Gate, Earl Fitzwilliam, Rotherham, Yorkshire. Fall of roof in the mine.

BRAILSFORD Thomas - 1868 - 03/01/1868 – Age 30 - Collier. Park Gate, Earl Fitzwilliam, Rotherham, Yorkshire. Fall of Coal.

BRAIN Isaac - 1866 - 02/07/1866 – Age 30 - Hanger-on. Bull Hall, Jefferys, Sanders and Co., Gloucester. Lost his life in an inset in consequence of being forcibly and violently crushed by the ascending cart against the ‘gug’ pulley.

BRAIN Joseph - 1862 - 12/02/1862 – Age 28 - Collier. Jay’s, JJ Whittuck, Kingswood, Gloucester. A fall of roof and rubbish killed Brain and imprisoned Isles and in about 12 hours a second fall took place and deprived the latter of life. Iles was hewing and Brain was showing him the light. Earlier they had put in a shot of gunpowder to blast the Coal with little effect; then Coal fell from high timbers, put up that same evening. Inquest held.

BRAMLEY Charles - 1863 - 30/10/1863 – Age 32 - Miner. Swanwick, WP Morewood, Alfreton, Derbyshire. Inundation of water. 2 killed.

BRAMLEY Joseph - 1865 - 12/06/1865 – Age 25 - Collier. Haydock, Richard Evans and Co., St. Helens, Lancashire. Explosion of gunpowder. 

BRAMLEY William - 1869 - 12/02/1869 – Age 38 – Ironstone getter. Mill (ironstone), Hird, Dawson, ad Hardy Bradford, Yorkshire. Fall of roof. Accident took place 15th Oct, - 1869. He lingered for four months.

BRAMWELL J. - 1868 - 24/03/1868 – Age 25 Bye worker, Swaithe Main, Edmunds Main Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of Coal while taking out puncheons.

BRAND William - 1866 - 01/12/1866 – Age 16 - Drawer. Cuttlehill, Henderson and Wallace, Dunfermline, Fife. A pick fell on his head while he was ascending. Cage not covered.

BRANDWOOD Roger - 1861 - 25/04/1861. Shaw Lane, Michael Stocks, Halifax, Yorkshire. Fall of roof in the mine.

BRANNON Patrick - 1867 - 31/05/1867 – Age 40 - Hewer. Washington, Durham.  Cage accident. 10 killed. Wife and four children.

BRANSON, Thomas - 1868 - 25/08/1868 – Age 37 - Enginewright. Campbell Staveley Coal and Iron Co., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Fell down shaft whilst fixing pumps.

BRANT H. - 1862 - 09/04/1862 – Age 47 - Loader. Gospel Oak, Grazebrook and Aston, Tipton, Staffordshire. Explosion of firedamp injured on 26th. Feb. Died this day.

BRASH James - 1866 - 03/04/1866 - Sinker. Boghead (ironstone), James Russell and Son, Bathgate, Lanarkshire. Engine put of gear and they fell to the bottom. 2 killed.

BRAY Calib - 1868 - 10/08/1868 – Age 21 - Collier. Middle Duffryn, Powell’s Duffryn Steam Coal Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Killed by trams.

BRAY R. - 1864 - 15/04/1864 – Age 23 - Pikeman. Chillington, Chillington Co., Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. Fell down pit shaft whilst ascending. He improperly stood upon the tackled skip and forced it under the framework at the pit top which caused two of the tackling chains to break, precipitating him to the bottom, the result of his own carelessness.

BRAZIL John - 1860 - 03/07/1860 - Collier. Gelly, Neville and Co., Llanelly, Carmarthen. Suffocation (blackdamp).

BREAKWAY H. - 1866 - 23/06/1866 – Age 15 - Collier Boy. Tipton, Green Willetts and Hammond, Tipton, Staffordshire. Injured in an explosion, of firedamp 14th. Died this day.

BREARLEY T. - 1864 - 20/12/1864 – Age 21 - Bandsman. Tame Mill, Johnson, Biggs and Co., Willenhall, Staffordshire. Fall of Coal in new mine and fireclay Coals from a slip. A good and proper supply of timber props would have prevented this accident.

BREEN Patrick - 1863 - 28/04/1863 – Age 21 - Putter. Bitchburn, Starkers and Love, Crook, Durham. Crushed between tub and prop.

BREEZE B. - 1860 - 27/01/1860 – Age 17 - Loader. Apedale, J.E. Heathcote, Newcastle, Staffordshire. Waggon ran over him on incline.

BREEZE John - 1866 - 13/12/1866 - Boy. Talk o’th’ Hill, North Stafford Co., Newcastle, Staffordshire. Explosion of gas. 92 killed.

BRENNAN James - 1866 - 14/06/1866 – Age 19. Dukinfield, FDP Astley, Ashton-under-Lyne Cheshire. Explosion of firedamp. 38 killed.

BRERTON Frank - 1866 - 13/12/1866 - Boy. Talk o’th’ Hill, North Stafford Co., Newcastle, Staffordshire. Explosion of gas. 92 killed.

BRETT Miles - 1867 - 06/12/1867 – Age 11 - Waggoner. Swinshaw Hargreaves, Ashworth and Co., Baxenden, Lancashire. A waggon he was taking down the slope got off the rails and crushed his head between it and the roof.

BRETTELL T. - 1862 - 16/07/1862 – Age 28 - Collier. Netherton, Messrs. Grazebrook, Dudley, Worcestershire. Fall of Coal in thick Coal occasioned by a bump.

BRETTON Peter - 1867 - 19/02/1867 – Age 60 - Collier. West Riding and Silkstone, Pape and Pearson, Normanton, Yorkshire. Fall of roof. 2 killed.

BRIDDICK Jacob - 1864 - 13/04/1864 – Age 17 – Ponyputter. Old Etherley, Henry Stobart and Co., Auckland, Durham. Crushed by tubs.

BRIDGE James - 1868 - 25/02/1868 – Age 32 - Miner. Hudclough, Smithson and Butterworth, Facit, Lancashire. Roof stone which broke off at a seam falling upon him.

BRIDGE R - 1868 - 09/12/1868 – Age 42 – Butty. Oldfield, T Goddard and Sons, Longton, Staffordshire. Fall of roof.

BRIDGES George - 1860 - 16/02/1860 – Age 51 - Collier. Conygre Timsbury Coal Co., Timsbury, Somerset. Fall of strong top over Coal facilitated by a double slip. Died 28th.

BRIDGES Joshua - 1862 - 26/06/1862 – Age 35 - Collier. Lower Conygre, Timsbury Coal Co., Timsbury, Somerset. Explosion of powder whilst filling a straw for a shot. Careless exposure to a spark of this dangerous material. Died 13th July.

BRIDGES Thomas - 1862 - 04/04/1862 – Age 36 - Collier. Hayeswood, Hayeswood Coal Co., Timsbury, Somerset. Fall of stone in hard heading. This stone should have been earlier cropped.

BRIDGEWATER C - 1868 - 30/10/1868 – Age 17 – Bondsman. Salt Well, Earl of Dudley, Dudley, Worcestershire. Injured slightly by fall of patchels in thick Coal pit 29th. Died this day.

BRIDGEWATER R. - 1860 - 02/02/1860 – Age 20 - Miner. Wilnecote, Perrins and Harrison, Tamworth, Staffordshire. Fall of roof.

BRIERLEY Ashton - 1865 - 02/11/1865 – Age 40 - Miner. Brotherod, HH Fishwick and Co., Rochdale, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp. The Fireman knowing there was gas allowed him to go in with a candle to bat it out. Proceedings were taken by the owners and the Fireman was fined 5s, and costs.

BRIERLEY John - 1865 - 17/04/1865 – Age 13 - Driver. Willington, A Strakers and Love, Ferry Hill, Durham. Struck by crank pump when oiling.

BRIERLEY Robert - 1863 - 07/01/1863 – Age 36 - Miner. Ashworth Hall, Richard and William Stott, Rochdale, Lancashire. His shot which he had lighted went off as he was in the act of getting away. Died 11th.

BRIGHT John - 1869 - 30/10/1869 – Age 22 - Hewer. Lambley, M Thompson and Sons, Alston, Northumberland. Fall of Coal.

BRIMBLE Alfred - 1866 - 12/01/1866 – Age 18 - Labourer. Old Grove, Timsbury Coal Co., Timsbury, Somerset. Was in attendance with a - Mason repairing a wall in the fifth vein. He fell from an inset or brow down to the very bottom of the pit. At the time there was projection of a large hudge placed there on purpose but it is supposed that he was asleep for on the Mason calling for mortar he jumped up and proceeded towards the inset (the wrong direction) and forced himself past the hudge into the shaft which he fell a distance of 22 fathoms.

BRIMBLE William - 1868 - 08/05/1868 – Age 16 - Collier. No.8, Ebbw Vale Co., Ltd, Ebbw Vale, Monmouth. Fall of top Coal whilst filling a tram in the heading which he and his father were driving. After the Coal fell an unseen slip became evident.

BRINDLE James - 1862 - 02/04/1862 – Age 36 - Miner. Mossfield, Thomas Simpson and Co., Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire Explosion of firedamp. Died 5th. William Yates, the Underlooker, who found Brindle had violated his instructions and made a small opening into the old workings with his pick. He at once ordered him to make up the aperture with clay, and to refrain from getting any more coal in that direction. Instead of attending to these instructions he proceeded to enlarge the opening, and afterwards passed through the hole which he had made with his lighted candle.

BRINDLE Thomas - 1862 - 14/04/1862 – Age 33 - Miner. Dootson and Vauze, Samuel Leather Blackrod, Lancashire. Crushed by engine being started as he was getting into the cage at the cannel Coal to ascend the shaft.

BRINDLEY C. - 1869 - 21/08/1869 – Age 24 - Pikeman. Wyrley Cannock, Wyrley Cannock Colliery Co., Cheslyn Hay, Staffordshire. Injured by fall of Coal while holing in thin mine 17th. Died this day. The result of inadequate timbering.

BRINDLEY J - 1868 - 04/11/1868 – Age 34 - Engineer. Conduit, Conduit Colliery Co., Brownhills, Staffordshire. He and another were engaged changing the bucket in the pumping and winding pit when the chain suspending the bucket door snapped and precipitated him to the bottom.

BRINDLEY Mark - 1860 - 28/01/1860 - 15 - Collier. Abergwawr, Thomas Powell and Son, Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (6 feet vein).

BRISCOE G - 1869 - 16/04/1869 – Age 14 - Collier. Foxyards, Earl of Dudley, Tipton, Staffordshire. Walked into shaft.

BRISCOE J - 1869 - 25/09/1869 – Age 21 - Collier. Hall, Bridge, W Hipkins and Co., Tividale, Staffordshire. Suffocated by carbonic acid gas in pit shaft. 2 killed.

BRISTOL T. - 1862 - 27/03/1862 – Age 42- Sinker. The Lays, Benjamin Wood, Brierley Hill, Staffordshire. Concussion to the brain on 19th Feb. Died this day from effusion.

BRITTEN James - 1865 - 25/03/1865 – Age 30 - Collier. Tredegar, Tredegar Iron Co., Tredegar, Monmouth. Sudden fall of about 13 tons of Coal nearly five of which fell on him killing him instantly.

BRITTON Henry - 1863 - 06/03/1863 – Age 48 - Collier. Ashton Vale, Knight and Abbotts, Bedminster, Gloucester. Killed by a heavy fall of roof whilst somewhat unskilfully he was knocking out a prop to save it.

BRITTON James - 1868 - 16/11/1868 – Age 19 - Collier. Neilston No.12, James Wallace and Co., Kilsyth, Stirling. Explosion of firedamp.

BROADHEAD George - 1863 - 09/06/1863. Honey Well, Thorp’s executors, Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of Coal in the mine.
