BIRCHALL Henry - 1869 - 08/01/1869 – Age 49. Rainford, Rainford Colliery Co., St. Helens, Lancashire. The mine having become ignited by the heat of the furnace the men were trying to extinguish it with water when the flame backed upon them and burned them so severely that they died from the effects thereof. 7 killed.

BIRD E. - 1862 - 01/09/1862 - Pikeman. Bridge (ironstone), Lloyd and Povey Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. Fall of ironstone measures brought about by non-observance of special rule 28 which requires pikemen to securely sprag and spurn whilst holing as well as timber the roof if necessary.

Hamilton, Lanarkshire. Explosion of firedamp. They were blown into the pit by the concussion falling about 16 fathoms and were killed. 2 killed.

Blackburne and Co., Oldham, Lancashire. Roof falling in Higher Bent mine. It fell off to the break such as is usually found at the side of a level. 2 killed.

BLAKEMORE T. - 1860 - 26/01/1860 – Age 21 - Collier. New Marsh, Frayne and Co., Ashton, Somerset. He was stopping to fill the tub when some Coal fell from above. After the mass fell a slip was discovered.

BLENKHORN William - 1867 - 28/08/1867 – Dayman. Pendlebury, Andrew Knowles and Sons, Pendlebury, Lancashire. Explosion, of firedamp in Rams mine. He was using an open light whist repairing an airway through old workings when some gas came off the Coal at the top of the space where the roof had fallen. Died 6th Nov.

BOOTH William - 1866 - 14/06/1866 – Age 24. Dukinfield, FDP Astley, Ashton-under-Lyne, Cheshire. Explosion of firedamp. 38 killed.

BOOTHROYD William - 1866 - 13/12/1866. Oaks, Messrs. Firth, Bamber and Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Explosions of gas. The total number of victims was 334 by the first explosion of the 12th December 1866 and 26 by the second explosion the following day. Total 360. Seventy five bodies were recovered prior to the shafts being closed forty five were recovered during the first twelve months after the shaft was reopened and seventy during the past years making the total 190. This deducted from 360 leaves 17 bodies still in the Colliery. It is remarkable that all but two have been identified.

BOUNCER W. - 1861 - 22/03/1861 – Age 34 - Deputy Overman. Rough Hay, Messrs. Addenbrooke, Darlaston, Staffordshire. Injured by a fall in new mine and fireclay coals 9th. Was pulling some rates (loose Coal) of a pillar when 2cwt. fell upon him from a slip. Died this day.

BOWATER A. - 1862 - 19/02/1862 – Age 14 - Horsedriver. Foxyards, Hartland and Co., Tipton, Staffordshire. The horse accidentally knocked a setting of timber which allowed the roof to fall on him. Thick Coal rib and pillar pit.

BOWATER J - 1869 - 29/06/1869 – Age 22 – Bondsman. White Heath, T Price, Rowley Regis, Staffordshire. Fall of Coal and slack brought about by a bump. 2 killed.

BOWATER R - 1868 - 23/11/1868 – Age 25 - Deputy. Tividale Hall, S Bradley, Dudley, Worcestershire. Injured by explosion of firedamp 14th. Died this day. 2 killed.

BOWDEN E. - 1866 - 09/02/1866 - Pikeman. Crab Tree, Shaw and Mason, Wednesbury, Staffordshire. Fall of Coal in thick Coal rib and pillar pit. He neglected to set timber.

BOWDEN Richard - 1864 - 16/07/1864 – Age 24 – Horsekeeper. Denton Lane, Chamber Colliery Co., Hollinwood, Lancashire. Falling out of the cage from the Black mine mouthing to the bottom as he was descending the shaft.

BOWDITCH James - 1865 - 23/09/1865 – Age 30 Pump man. Ebbw Vale, Ebbw Vale Co., Ebbw Vale, Monmouth. Whilst awaiting in the engine pit he fell away and was picked up dead at the bottom.

BOWDY Thomas - 1865 - 30/08/1865 – Age 30 - Enginewright. Abercarn, Ebbw Vale Co., Ebbw Vale, Monmouth. Was overwhelmed by a heavy piece of metal 24th at the new enginehouse. Both legs were broken. Died 30th.

BOWEN F. - 1869 - 18/12/1869 – Age 48 - Pikeman. Monway, Patent Shaft Co., Wednesbury, Staffordshire. Injured by Coal he was cutting in a new mine Coal pit. Died 4 hours later.

BOWEN Joseph - 1860 - 01/12/1860. Black Vein, Risca Iron and Coal Co. Risca, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp. This lamentable calamity was occasioned by a sudden outburst of gas on most probably, a defective lamp. 142 persons, killed.

BOWEN W. - 1865 - 16/12/1865 – Age 57- Sinker. Moseley Hole, Chillington Co., Willenhall, Staffordshire. A new biatt or beam of timber which supported the scaffold gave way and precipitated him down the sinking shaft a distance of 9 yards.

BOWER Thomas - 1860 - 12/07/1860 – Age 25 - Miner. Madeley Court, W.O. Foster, Ironbridge, Shropshire. Fall of roof.

BOWERS Joseph - 1869 - 11/05/1869 – Age 12 – Trapper. Oaks, Firth Barber and Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Caught his hand in a pulley wheel and died of lockjaw.

BOWES James - 1864 - 16/01/1864 – Age 26 - Drawer. Stoneriggs No.3, Coltness Iron Co., Lanarkshire. He was waiting for a loaded hutch at the Colliers wall face in splint Coal when he was killed by a fall of roof.

BOWKER J. - 1860 - 15/11/1860 – Age 11 - Drawer. Denton, Trustees of the late Ellis Fletcher, Denton, Lancashire. Falling from a tub which he had laid hold of as it was going up.

BOWKER John - 1861 - 19/11/1861 – Age 55 – Break man. Standish, John Taylor and Sons, Wigan, Lancashire. Fell from the mouthing down the pit.

BOWKER Thomas - 1864 - 16/11/1864 – Age 31. Withymoor, Messrs. Nock Withymoor,  Staffordshire. Fell part way down shaft. The chain broke. 8 killed.

BOWLES F. - 1862 - 26/02/1862. Ketley, Ketley Co., Wellington, Shropshire. Fall of roof.

BOWMAN William - 1865 - 24/05/1865 – Age 16 - Collier. Portland, Butterley Iron and Coal Co., Alfreton, Derbyshire. Fall of roof.

BOX James - 1860 - 20/12/1860 – Age 20 - Shifter. Minor Pit, Hetton Coal Co., Hetton, Durham. Explosion of gas supposed to have been generated from the coals of the engine or boiler fire and not from gas generated in the workings of the mine. 22 killed.

BOX John - 1860 - 06/11/1860 – Age 35 - Collier. Lower Duffryn, Thomas Powell and Sons, Aberdare, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas (9 feet vein) 12 killed.

BOYCE Bernard - 1863 - 09/07/1863 – Age 60 – Brusher. Govan No.4, WS Dixon, Glasgow, Lanarkshire. Fall of stone at the face.

BOYD Hugh - 1866 - 30/11/1866 – Age 30 - Collier. Wishaw No.7, Wishaw Iron Co., Wishaw, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof. 2 killed.

BOYD Stewart - 1865 - 13/02/1865 – Age 24 - Miner. Bradley (ironstone), Merry and Cunningham, Dalry, Ayrshire. Explosion of firedamp.

BOYLE Edward - 1862 - 20/01/1862 – Age 43 – Brusher. Towerlands No.8, John H Watt, Irvine, Ayrshire. Fall of Coal.

BOYLE James - 1860 - 04/08/1860. Cam Haye Underville and Co. Walsall, Staffordshire. Explosion of firedamp this day and he died 17th. A notice was sent to Mr. Baker but no inquest was held and I never heard of the accident till long after its occurrence.
