Part of a cross heading had been permitted to fill with firedamp to the extent of between 50 and 60 yards lengthways and was thus allowed to remain for a certain number of days notwithstanding that people occasionally passed and repassed one mouthing of the heading and a lesser one called the ‘Cross hole’. I remark that the Colliers should have been taken from their work and the gas safely dislodged. 26 killed.

WILLIAMS Thomas - 1865 - 21/07/1865 – Age 12- Doorboy. Tredegar, Tredegar Iron Co., Tredegar, Monmouth. He was riding out from his work in a tram when a fall of rubbish took place and killed him. No riding in or out should be permitted. Discipline well carried out by educated under officers will do much. The lack of care and education is fatal in its results.

The total number of victims was 334 by the first explosion of the 12th December 1866 and 26 by the second explosion the following day. Total 360. Seventy five bodies were recovered prior to the shafts being closed forty five were recovered during the first twelve months after the shaft was reopened and seventy during the past years making the total 190. This deducted from 360 leaves 17 bodies still in the Colliery. It is remarkable that all but two have been identified.
