RILEY Thomas (injured) - 1862 - 17/06/1862 - Sinker. Shorey Bank, Potters and Co., Over Darwin, Lancashire. Powder from a blast exploding in the hole being rammed. 3 others were hurt and 3 by a similar explosion on the 12th. A charge had been prepared by Ramsden and Youd of about 2 lb. of blasting powder, and they were engaged in stemming it upon the hole previously prepared for it. Whilst Redmayne and Riley were similarly employed, the odd man, Bury, was attending to the sending up of the tubs. Youd was holding the rammer, while Ramsden was striking with his hammer for him. When the rammer, as in the case of the accident last week came into Contact with the hard rock, it struck fire, igniting the fuse and exploding the shot, scattering large pieces on all sides. Youd, a powerful man, six feet two inches in height, was killed on the spot, his hands, arms and legs being literally shattered to pieces, and his face blackened dreadfully. Bury was badly bruised about the legs and chest and Redmayne was severely injured. Riley and Ramsden were badly bruised and scorched on the arms, head and legs. The jury without leaving their seats returned a verdict of "Accidental death". (Blackburn Times).

ROEBUCK Joseph - 1866 13/12/1866. Oaks, Messrs. Firth, Bamber and Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Explosions of gas. The total number of victims was 334 by the first explosion of the 12th December 1866 and 26 by the second explosion the following day. Total 360. Seventy five bodies were recovered prior to the shafts being closed forty five were recovered during the first twelve months after the shaft was reopened and seventy during the past years making the total 190. This deducted from 360 leaves 17 bodies still in the Colliery. It is remarkable that all but two have been identified.
