MORGAN John - 1860 - 01/12/1860 – Age 35. Black Vein, Risca Iron and Coal Co., Risca, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp. This lamenatble calamity was occasioned by a sudden outburst of gas on most probably, a defective lamp. 142 persons, killed.

MORGAN John - 1860 - 21/01/1860 – Age 26 - Collier. Coedcaeddu, Rhymney Iron Co., Rhymney, Monmouth. Helping a fellow workman to pinch down some shale he unfortunately knocked out a prop which was immediately followed by a heavy fall of Coal. There was a complete triangle of slips through which the mass fell.

MORGAN John - 1865 - 30/09/1865 – Age 27 - Hitcher. Middle Duffryn, Powell’s Steam Coal Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. By a piece of coal falling down the shaft.

MORGAN John - 1866 - 26/04/1866 – Age 22 - Haulier. Cwmbran, John Lawrence, Cwmbran, Monmouth. There was a steam engine underground for the deep workings and the water for generating steam is so very bad that they frequently have to blow right through. For this there was a large cock but it was unavoidably close to the main horse road. The Haulier came out about 2.30 am but unfortunately either his horse ran away or he drove him too fast for on arriving at the boilers the trams flew off the plates and he knocked down the upright pipe to which the cock was attached and the escape of the steam became so rapid and fierce. Not one of the three men escaped. I have since had double cocks established so that there is but little possibility of any repetition. 3 killed.

MORGAN Lewis - 1863 - 02/10/1863 – Age 47 - Collier. Abercwmboi, David Davies, Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (4 feet vein).

MORGAN Lewis - 1866 - 17/02/1866 – Age 14 - Collier. Rhymney Colliery, Rhymney Iron Co., Rhymney, Monmouth. Killed in the Mardy pit by a fall. The vein is in two lifts and just where he worked at the bottom Coal had been excavated and another man (David Price) was setting up a prop to the top lift when the Coal fell with great violence bruising his considerably but killing Lewis Morgan on the spot.

MORGAN Thomas - 1860 - 12/12/1860 – Age 15 - Collier. Werfa Heat, Evans and Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of Coal.

MORGAN Thomas - 1861 - 14/12/1861 – Age 22 - Collier. No.4, Tredegar Iron Co., Tredegar Monmouth. On the 27th Nov. they entered a far end with a naked light although danger signals were duly set and both father and Son, were severely burned by the explosion firedamp. One died 5th the other 14th. Their object was to fill some coal which actually lay within the cross timbers or danger signal. 2 killed.

MORGAN Thomas - 1865 - 07/06/1865 – Age 50 - Collier. Cwmbran, John Lawrence, Cwmbran, Monmouth. Had his back broken Nov - 1864 and lingered until this day.

MORGAN Thomas - 1865 - 16/06/1865 – Age 15. Tredegar, Tredegar Iron Co., Tredegar, Monmouth. Explosion of carburetted hydrogen gas in the Bedwellty new Colliery. Part of a cross heading had been permitted to fill with
firedamp to the extent of between 50 and 60 yards lengthways and was thus allowed to remain for a certain number of days notwithstanding that people occasionally passed and repassed one mouthing of the heading and a lesser one called the ‘Cross hole’. I remark that the Colliers should have been taken from their work and the gas safely dislodged. 26 killed.

The 6 got out of the skip safely but Morris became lame and having very bad sight feared to do so and then the skip immediately began to ascend and then was heard to fall to the bottom.

MORRIS James - 1865 - 22/11/1865 - Enginewright. Stoneclough, Knowles and Stott, Stoneclough, Lancashire. Falling down the Singing Clough shaft. He was about taking an air pipe down when it is supposed a strong wind blew the tub over and knocked him down.

MORRIS John - 1866 - 07/09/1866 – Age 29 - Collier. Risca, TW Rhodes, Risca, Monmouth. The Black vein pit is worked by a very long engine bank and it is against the rules to ride on trams down this. The trams flew off the metals and they were crushed to death under them. 2 killed.

MORRIS Thomas - 1866 - 14/02/1866 – Age 55 - Collier. Bargoed Level, Bargoed Co. Ltd., Bargoed, Glamorgan. By super incumbent pressure a piece of coal flew out and struck him on the breast but as far as could be judged not with extreme violence in fact there was not a mark on his person, but he was supposed to be afflicted with heart disease. Death was instantaneous.

MORRIS W - 1866 - 01/12/1866 – Age 17 - Banksman. Chillington, Chillington Co., Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. Fell backwards into pit shaft.

MORRIS W - 1868 - 29/02/1868 – Bondsman. Bourne Hill, Messrs. Nock, Rowley Regis, Staffordshire. Suffocated by a fall of loose coal and dirt caused by a bump which forced out the timber settings. 2 killed.

MORRIS W. - 1862 - 10/01/1862 – Age 12 - Collier. Coneygre, Earl of Dudley, Dudley, Worcestershire. Fell down pit shaft. He was carelessly leaning over the pit mouth.

MORRIS William - 1864 - 13/04/1864 – Age 30 - Collier. Squborwen, Samuel Thomas, Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of stone from roof.

MORRIS William - 1867 - 06/07/1867 – Age 50 - Hitcher. Bwlch-y-garn, J and C Bailey, Beaufort, Monmouth. This man was killed by something falling down the shaft. It was either a lump of coal or shale but the piece was not found.

MORRISON, D. - 1869 - 24/05/1869 – Age 40 – Stoker. Carfin, WS Dixon, Motherwell, Lanarkshire. Killed while greasing beam in shaft.

MORRISON, Matthew - 1866 - 26/02/1866 – Age 36 - Collier. Bank Colliery, Bank Coal Co., New Cumnock, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof. 2 killed.

MORRISS James - 1864 - 23/03/1864 – Age 19 - Drawer. Haydock, Richard Evans and Co., St. Helens, Lancashire. Fall of roof.

MORROW Robert - 1866 - 16/08/1866 – Age 39 - Hewer. Adelaide, Joseph Pease and Partners, Bishop Auckland, Durham. Explosion of firedamp at a shot for blasting stone in 4-feet or Harvey seam. 4 killed.

MORROW Spoors - 1869 - 24/06/1869 – Age 18 - Hewer. Sherburn, Earl of Durham, Durham. Run over by set on engine plane.

MORT Joseph - 1866 13/12/1866. Oaks, Messrs. Firth, Bamber and Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Explosions of gas. The total number of victims was 334 by the first explosion of the 12th December 1866 and 26 by the second explosion the following day. Total 360. Seventy five bodies were recovered prior to the shafts being closed forty five were recovered during the first twelve months after the shaft was reopened and seventy during the past years making the total 190. This deducted from 360 leaves 17 bodies still in the Colliery. It is remarkable that all but two have been identified.

MORTON Emmanuel - 1864 - 18/02/1864 – Age 64 - Collier. Pennywell Road, G Chick and Co., Kingswood, Gloucester. He was on top of the water butt going slowly down to ‘pick in’ and examine the shaft, when the butt or tank came to a length of guide which had started from its perpendicular by loss of a bolt. This tipped the tank to one side and he having a candle in one hand and neglecting to hold on with the other fell into the sump and was drowned.

MORTON George - 1869 - 15/09/1869 – Age 59 - Collier. Tinsley, B Huntsman, Rotherham, Yorkshire. Coal took fire from some unknown source and they were suffocated. Shafts obliged to be sealed. 3 killed.

MORTON John - 1869 - 02/02/1869 – Age 40 – Roadman. Shieldmuir, Wishaw Iron Co., Wishaw, Lanarkshire. By fall of Coal while examining a pillar.

MORTON Sam - 1868 - 21/05/1868 – Age 26 - Collier. Bells Dyke, Dundas Simpson, Airdrie, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof (sandstone) while taking out pillars, Sean 4ft.

MOSES Daniel - 1864 - 11/08/1864 – Age 26 - Haulier. Glyn, Ebbw Vale Co., Pontypool, Monmouth. Killed by a fall of roof at the intersection of a stall with the heading. They upset a loaded tram into the stall but in so doing knocked out the timbers. 2 killed.
