MELVIN Thomas - 1863 - 11/07/1863 – Age 45 - Drawer. Woodside, James Smith and Son, Hamilton, Lanarkshire. He fell down to a lower seam. The scaffold had been removed unknown to him during the previous night and had not been replaced by the overman.

MENZIES Thomas - 1869 - 20/10/1869 – Age 19 - Collier. Haydock, Richard Evans and Sons, St. Helens, Lancashire. Supposed to have fallen out of the cage while attempting to slide down guide rod.

MERCER Edward - 1860 - 20/12/1860 – Age 40 - Asst. Fireman. Platt Lane, Wright Mercer, Wigan, Lancashire. Fell out of the cage descending the shaft.

MERCER James - 1866 - 14/06/1866 – Age 34. Dukinfield, FDP Astley, Ashton-under-Lyne, Cheshire. Explosion of firedamp. 38 killed.

MERCER John - 1868 - 26/12/1868 – Age 48 – Dataller. Queen Colliery, Richard Evans and Sons, Haydock, St. Helens, Lancashire. Explosion of gas 26 killed.

MERCY Samuel - 1867 - 14/08/1867 – Age 22 - Collier. Lightmoor, William Crawshay, Cinderford, Somerset. Killed by fall of about 2 tons of clod. He certainly ought to have set another prop.

MEREDITH Charles - 1865 - 16/06/1865 – Age 20. Tredegar, Tredegar Iron Co., Tredegar, Monmouth. Explosion of carburetted hydrogen gas in the Bedwellty new Colliery. Part of a cross heading had been permitted to fill with firedamp to the extent of between 50 and 60 yards lengthways and was thus allowed to remain for a certain number of days notwithstanding that people occasionally passed and repassed one mouthing of the heading and a lesser one called the ‘Cross hole’. I remark that the Colliers should have been taken from their work and the gas safely dislodged. 26 killed.

MEREDITH Evan - 1867 - 08/11/1867 – Age 48. Ferndale, David Davies and Son, Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas through one of the deceased taking the top off his lamp and exposing a naked light. 178 killed.

MEREDITH J. - 1861 - 03/02/1861 - Hooker-on. British, T. Savin, Oswestry, Shropshire. Bricks fell out of the side of the shaft on him.

MEREDITH J. - 1867 - 12/04/1867 – Age 27 - Collier. Holly Bush, William Bowers, Stoke, Staffordshire. Explosion of firedamp.

MEREDITH Thomas - 1864 - 17/03/1864 – Age 14 - Haulier. No.2 (ironstone), Ebbw Vale Co., Sirhowy, Monmouth. He started to take off a loaded set of trams out of the level but was soon after found doubled up under them dead.

MEREDITH W. - 1865 - 08/04/1865 - Banksman. Corbyn’s Bank, R Mills and Co., Dudley, Worcestershire. Fell into pit shaft whilst engaged at the top.

MERRETT Anthony - 1865 - 27/04/1865 – Age 38 - Collier. Yate Long, Nowell and Co., Gloucester. By the fracture of an iron hook and the consequent fall of the ‘bye rope’ down the shaft. Anthony Wherrett was killed in the ascending cage by the rope and chain bulging the bonnet. Luke Simmons by reason, of the same hook fracture lost his life on the slope before he could reach a place of refuge. This was due to the shaft accident although death took place on the underground incline. 2 killed.

MERRICK T. - 1861 - 21/03/1861 – Age 40 - Collier. Barn Farm, P. Williams and Sons, Bilston, Staffordshire. Fall of Coal in new mine and fireclay Coals whilst in the act of removing timber props.

MERRICKS John - 1868 - 26/12/1868 – Age 30 - Collier. Queen Colliery, Richard Evans and Sons, Haydock, St. Helens, Lancashire. Explosion of gas 26 killed.

MERRY Peter - 1868 - 05/11/1868 – Age 23 - Collier. Adderley Green, Stirrup and Pye, Longton, Staffordshire. Fall of Coal.

MESSER Andrew - 1860 - 02/03/1860. Burradon Colliery, Burradon, Durham. Explosion of gas. 76 killed. Single.

METTRIC William - 1864 - 08/03/1864. Mount Osborne, William Day, Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of Coal in the shaft.

MICHELL John - 1867 - 03/10/1867 – Age 12 - Sheave Greaser. Whitlee, Bolckow, Vaughan and Co., Crook, Durham. Head crushed by tubs.

MIDDLETON G - 1869 - 07/07/1869 – Age 32 - Pikeman. Bromford, WH Dawes, West Bromwich, Staffordshire. The coal which he was cutting accidentally fell on him in thick coal pit.

MIDDLETON John - 1865 - 17/02/1865 – Age 35 - Collier. Bute Merthyr, Marquis of Bute, Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp from firing a shot. 4 killed.

MIDGLEY Samuel - 1866 - 02/09/1866 – Age 56 – Furnaceman. Crows Nest Colliery, Roscow and Lord, Milnrow Lancashire. Falling down the shaft from the furnace mouthing which was without the required fencing.

MILLAR Alexander - 1867 - 31/01/1867 – Age 38 - Sinker. Greenfield, Hamilton Coal Co., Hamilton, Lanarkshire. Explosion of firedamp. They were blown into the pit by the Concussion falling about 16 fathoms and were killed. 2 killed.

MILLAR David - 1866 - 24/11/1866 - Fireman. Braidhurst Colliery, Gavin Addie, Motherwell, Lanarkshire. Explosion of firedamp.

MILLAR G. - 1867 - 28/12/1867 – Age 48 - Sinker. Blackrigg Colliery, Wilson and Thompson, Airdrie, Lanarkshire. Rope not properly fastened in crane it ‘surged’ round while he was descending and he fell off scaffold and was killed.

MILLARD David - 1868 - 27/11/1868 – Age 20 - Collier. Clandown, Clandown Coal Co., Radstock, Somerset. Gunpowder explosion by which they were so injured died 14th Dec. They were not justified in using powder in coal. It was supplied to them to blast the top. 2 killed.

MILLER Archibald – 1860 – 28/06/1860 – Age 36 - Collier. Radstock Colliery, J.G. Buchanan, Clandown Coal Co., Eastfield, Rutherglen, Lanarkshire. By falling down a ‘blind’ about 6.5 fathoms.

MILLER Thomas - 1862 - 22/11/1862 - Hewer. Walker, NG Lambert and Co., Durham. Explosion of gas 16 killed. Of Bigges Main, single man, the support of his mother, who was dependent upon him.

He had been in the same place a few hours before and found no gas, but he ought not to have returned without taking a safety lamp to ascertain that the ventilation was being maintained. Died 8th Apr.

MORGAN Alexander - 1867 - 05/03/1867 – Age 55 - Engineman. Wemyss Colliery, Wemyss’ Trustees, Kirkcaldy Fife. He was in the shaft watching the start of a new pumping engine when owing to a defective casting about 300 feet of the new pipes in the shaft fell down and some struck him.

Part of a cross heading had been permitted to fill with firedamp to the extent of between 50 and 60 yards lengthways and was thus allowed to remain for a certain number of days notwithstanding that people occasionally passed and repassed one mouthing of the heading and a lesser one called the ‘Cross hole’. I remark that the Colliers should have been taken from their work and the gas safely dislodged. 26 killed.
