EDY Edwin - 1862 - 21/02/1862 – Age 40 - Collier. Yard, Rhymney Iron Co., Rhymney, Monmouth. A piece of shale fell and broke his leg on the 21st and it was thought he would recover but being an infirm man the shock to his system was too great. Died 25th.

EGGLESTON or EGGLESTOP John - 1869 - 26/08/1869 – Age 31 – Joiner. Thornley Original, Hartlepool Colliery Co., Tow Law, Durham. His forefinger was injured and lockjaw set in.

ELIAS William - 1863 - 26/12/1863 – Age 27. Llwynvi, Llwynvi Co., Llwynvi, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas. 15 killed.

ELIE James - 1869 - 04/03/1869 – Age 19 - Putter. Oakenshaw, Strakers and Love, Willington, Durham. Fall of stone.

ELLIS John - 1866 - 22/09/1866 – Age 50 – Butty. Berry Hill, William Bowers, Hanley, Staffordshire. Fell out of cage whilst repairing signal wire.

ELLIS T. - 1868 - 28/10/1868 – Age 51 – Bondsman. Groveland, H Bagnall and Sons, Dudley, Port Worcestershire. He was removing slack from under a large piece of coal when it rolled over and displaced the timber settings under the roof a portion of which fell and killed him.

ELWELL J. - 1861 - 22/01/1861 – Engine tenter. Wolverhampton, Aston and Shaw, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. Bursting of a steam boiler at the pumping engine. 2 killed.

ELWELL J. - 1869 - 07/04/1869 – Age 21 – Bondsman. Princes End, Barbours Field Co., Tipton, Staffordshire. Fall of Coal in thick coal pit from a slip in a pillar.

ELWEN George - 1863 - 12/09/1863 – Age 32 - Sinker. Auckland Park South, Black Boy Coal Co., Auckland, Durham. Killed by falling down sinking shaft owing to upsetting of a cradle upon which they were working. Too many of them were on the edge of the cradle and it overbalanced. 4 killed.

ELWEN John - 1863 - 12/09/1863 – Age 45 - Sinker. Auckland Park South, Black Boy Coal Co., Auckland, Durham. Killed by falling down sinking shaft owing to upsetting of a cradle upon which they were working. Too many of them were on the edge of the cradle and it overbalanced. 4 killed.

EMANUEL William - 1864 - 08/10/1864 – Miner. Agecroft Bridge, Andrew Knowles and Sons, Pendlebury, Lancashire. The cage descending on his foot as he was preparing to get out before alighting. Died 14th at Manchester, Infirmary.

EMERSON, William - 1861 - 24/01/1861 – Age 11- Doorboy. Tillery, Price and Co., Newport, Monmouth. On the 21st fell between trams. He had no business even to be near them and died this day.

EMERY G - 1868 - 13/12/1868 – Age 42 - Collier. Berry Hill, W Bowers, Stoke, Staffordshire. Fall of coal.

EMERY Thomas - 1861 - 11/10/1861 – Age 17 - Carting Boy. Braysdown, Wait and Co., Radstock, Somerset. Whilst loading his tub a heavy fall of stone came and killed him.

EMMERSON, Christopher - 1861 - 02/03/1861 – Age 53 - Hewer. Heugh Hall, Owners of West Hetton Colliery, Ferry Hill, Durham. Crushed by a horse in the rolley way.

EMMERSON, J. - 1860 - 29/09/1860 – Age 15 - Banksman. Eppleton Jane Pit, South Hetton Coal Co., Hetton, Durham. Fell off gangway and broke his thigh.

EMMERSON, John - 1868 - 14/05/1868 – Age 29 - Hewer. Wingate Grange, Executors of J Gully, Ferry Hill, Durham. Fell out of an iron tub to a distance of 20 fathoms.

EMMERSON, Samuel - 1863 - 19/11/1863 – Age 12 - Collier. Upper Level, PA Williams and Co., Tillery, Monmouth. Fall of an enormous mass of roof.

EMMERSON, Thomas - 1866 - 13/02/1866 – Age 38 – Onsetter. Hetton, South Hetton Coal Co., Fencehouses, Durham. Struck by bolt that fell down shaft.

ENGLAND ? - 1865 - 22/08/1865. Glyn Pit, Pontypool. Crushed against a tram.

ENGLAND Isaac - 1864 - 17/11/1864 – Age 15 - Collier. Bwllfa, Fothergill and Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. He with several others was riding on the full trams on the surface incline against the rules of the Colliery. Fell and the trams passed over his hand. It was not considered a serious accident but in a few days lock-jaw ensued from which he died.

ENGLAND James - 1862 - 12/03/1862 – Age 45 - Miner. Butterley, Butterley Co., Alfreton, Derbyshire. Fall of roof.

ENGLAND Thomas - 1865 - 28/08/1865 – Age 18 - Miner. Glyn (ironstone), Ebbw Vale Co., Ebbw Vale, Monmouth. He was engaged in loading a tram when the roof came down and deprived him of life.

ENGLAND William - 1862 - 17/06/1862. Car House Colliery, Hague and Co., Rotherham, Yorkshire. Fall of Coal in the mine.

ENGLISH ? - 1861 - 25/05/1861 – Age 34 - Fireman. Coxhoe New Colliery, R.W. Jackson and Co., Ferry Hill, Durham. Killed by an arm of the ‘jack’.

ENGLISH Edward - 1860 - 01/12/1860. Black Vein, Risca Iron and Coal Co., Risca, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp. This lamenatble calamity was occasioned by a sudden outburst of gas on most probably, a defective lamp. 142 persons, killed.

ENGLISH Samuel - 1862 - 21/06/1862 – Age 49 - Collier. Deep Colliery, Brain and Co., Kingswood, Somerset. Fall of rock over coal occasioned by joint formation.

ENGLISH William - 1865 - 20/01/1865. Hall Colliery, Royd Haynes and Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Falling down shaft. 3 killed.

ENION Benjamin - 1860 - 31/08/1860 - Collier. Haigh, Earl of Crawford and Balcarres, Haigh, Wigan, Lancashire. Fall of roof.

ENOCH Thomas - 1866 - 11/05/1866 – Age 18 - Collier. Westminster, Westminster Coal Co., Wrexham, Denbigh. Explosion in the Brassey mine.

ENTWISTLE Henry - 1868 - 24/11/1868 – Age 27 - Miner. Tong, Jethro Scowcroft, Bolton, Lancashire. Roof falling in Little Mine as he was taking Coal down.

ENTWISTLE James - 1864 - 15/10/1864 – Age 40 - Miner. Clayton, Leigh and Bradbury, Manchester, Lancashire. Roof falling in 4ft mine. 2 killed.

ENTWISTLE John (injured) - 1867 - 05/01/1867 - Miner. Cat Hole Pit, Accrington, Lancashire. He was engaged in his work on that day, a quantity of stone and rubble fell from the roof and buried him. He was however able to call out for help, and assistance was immediately rendered by the Drawer and two Colliers. He was conveyed to his residence at Fig Pie Hall and medical assistance was called in. His back and shoulders were badly bruised, but no bones broken or dislocated. He is progressing favourably". (Accrington, Times).

ERRINGTON Thomas - 1860 - 13/09/1860 - Putter. Haswell, Taylor and Co., Hetton, Durham. Head crushed between Coal tub and roof.

ERSKENE W - 1866 - 11/07/1866 – Age 13. Hill of Beath, Fife. Crushed by tubs.

ERSKINE Joseph - 1866 - 02/04/1866 – Age 38 - Collier. Baltic, John Howie, Hurlford, Ayrshire.  Fall of Coal while holing.

ERSKINE W. - 1866 - 11/07/1866 – Age 13 - Drawer. Hill of Beath, Ord Adams, Dunfermline, Fife. Crushed by tubs.

ESPIE James - 1867 - 08/03/1867 – Age 26 - Collier. Maidenbank, Eglington Iron Co., Muirkirk, Ayrshire.  Fall of Coal at the face.

ESTOR John - 1863 - 25/09/1863 - Boy. Thorncliffe, Newton and Co., Sheffield, Yorkshire. Crushed by Corfe in the mine.
