THOMAS Rees - 1867 - 28/10/1867 – Age 25 - Collier. Ty Trist, Tredegar Iron Co., Tredegar, Monmouth. There had been a fall near the sheet door which he imprudently kept open to fill his tram with the coal that had come down thus allowing gas to accumulate in the neighbouring stall. When he had finished loading the coal he with equal imprudence went right into the stall with a naked light (though provided with a safety lamp) and the gas immediately fired on 28th. He was so badly burnt that he died 31st.

The total number of victims was 334 by the first explosion of the 12th December 1866 and 26 by the second explosion the following day. Total 360. Seventy five bodies were recovered prior to the shafts being closed forty five were recovered during the first twelve months after the shaft was reopened and seventy during the past years making the total 190. This deducted from 360 leaves 17 bodies still in the Colliery. It is remarkable that all but two have been identified.

TIMSLEY Timothy - 1864 - 21/04/1864 – Age 30 - Hewer. Fireclay, Rhymney Iron Co., Rhymney, Monmouth. A shot failed and he returned to examine it and foolishly drove a steel pricker into the ramming when it went off and deprived him of life. A Copper tool might have saved him. He was working for fireclay only but as a thin leaf of coal lies directly under it, I have inserted it here as a Colliery accident.
TINGLE William - 1863 - 07/03/1863 – Age 13 - Collier. Trafalgar, Cornelius Brain, Forest of Dean, Gloucester. In consequence of a dispute at the pit bottom whether men or coal should go up. The boy (now in the cart) got caught by a ‘brow’ and was killed. His death may be attributed to a total absence of discipline in the pit. (Manslaughter brought in, in this case).

TURNER T - 1866 - 01/06/1866 – Age 64 - Sinker. Tiled House, J Timmins, Kingswinsford, Staffordshire. Whilst ascending sinking pit shaft upon a piece of rock the ‘rope’ coil forced the shrouding off the gin wheel which allowed the rope itself to slip off precipitating him to the bottom.

His place had been clear during the morning but having gone out for an hour gas accumulated and he omitted to try with the safety lamp on returning.
