A new cut through was made the evening before but being only a small hole and the flexible tubing which had been used instead of brattice being stowed in the previous cut through there was not enough room for the air which caused the ventilation being overpowered during the night. The fireman and the miners also appeared were going to work in the morning and one of them, was found in advance instead of the fireman making the inspection with a lamp. 7 killed.

JONES Charles - 1867 - 24/05/1867 – Age 15 - Collier. Black Vein, TW Rhodes, Risca, Monmouth. The father working in the stall and has his sons, with him and being desirous of getting a large quantity of Coal to ensure his pay he had worked all day with the young people after which the 2 boys continued another ‘turn’ though fatigued. They met with a smooth slip in the Coal which immediately fell and killed them. The father was to blame but a more ridged discipline would prevent accidents like these. 2 killed.

JONES David - 1864 - 07/05/1864 – Age 24 - Roadsman. No.15, Ebbw Vale Iron Co., Ebbw Vale, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp. He was set to watch a point until they had restored the ventilation (interrupted by a fall) when after telling a workman to retire he actually walked into the body of gas, exploded it and was killed on the spot yet he was a man of remarkable attainments.

JONES David - 1865 - 16/06/1865 – Age 45. Tredegar, Tredegar Iron Co., Tredegar, Monmouth. Explosion of carburetted hydrogen gas in the Bedwellty new Colliery. Part of a cross heading had been permitted to fill with firedamp to the extent of between 50 and 60 yards lengthways and was thus allowed to remain for a certain number of days notwithstanding that people occasionally passed and repassed one mouthing of the heading and a lesser one called the ‘Cross hole’. I remark that the Colliers should have been taken from their work and the gas safely dislodged. 26 killed.

He was carelessly removing the timber props with a large hammer when he ought to have used a pricker. The length of the shaft of the latter implement would have kept him clear of the fall and thus would have saved his life.

Got hurriedly into the hudge without perceiving that the slackened signal wire had entangled itself about his head. When the engine went a pace the wire cut through his mouth right away to the upper vertebral joint of the neck so that his head was nearly off.
