GREAVES E. - 1866 - 04/09/1866 - Labourer. Broughton, Broughton Coal Co., Wrexham, Denbigh. Run over on surface railway.

GREAVES John - 1869 - 20/01/1869 – Age 18 Incline Boy. Brightside, Pitsmoor Coal Co., Rotherham, Yorkshire. Through the breaking of a chain crushed by a tub at bottom of incline.

GREAVES Joseph - 1864 - 08/01/1864. Thurstonland, Messrs. Harpin, Holmfirth, Yorkshire. Fall of roof in the mine.

GREEN Christopher - 1868 - 02/11/1868 – Age 30 - Sinker. Black Lane, Rylands and Sons, Radcliffe, Lancashire. The brickwork of the shaft which they had put in gave way. They were aware that the bottom had become loosened by two shots and they had just gone down to make an examination. The rings above ought to have been plugged underneath, or to have rested on solid ground at the back part. 3 killed.

GREENFIELD Edward - 1864 - 16/11/1864 – Age 38. Withymoor, Messrs. Nock, Withymoor, Staffordshire. Fell part way down shaft. The chain broke. 8 killed.

GREENHALGH Jeremiah - 1868 - 02/07/1868 – Age 13 - Boy. Raikes, Earl of Bradford, Great Lever, Lancashire. Hurt at shunt by a train of waggons on the engine plane, the signal to go having been given too soon by someone. Died 13th Sept.

GREENHALGH John - 1868 - 04/02/1868 - Boy. Agecroft, Andrew Knowles and Sons, Pendlebury, Lancashire. Run over by waggon which he and other boys were taking down a brow.

GREENHALGH Thomas - 1868 - 09/11/1868 – Age 36 - Carpenter. Ringley Fold, Knowles and Stott, Radcliffe, Lancashire. Falling from part way down the shaft. In getting the broken rope away from the cage which was held by safety catches the catches became lifted by the rope thereby loosening the cage and he being on the top of it fell with it to the bottom if the shaft.

GREENWAY J. - 1867 - 30/08/1867 – Age 43 - Bandsman. Stallings, Messrs. Pearson, Kingswinsford, Staffordshire. Fall of Coal off a Cog in thick coal pit which he accidentally brought about himself.

GREENWAY W - 1868 - 21/10/1868 – Age 32 – Bondsman. Himley, Earl of Dudley, Kingswinsford, Staffordshire. Fall of stone call (about 150lbs) from side of a Cog about 6ft high.

GREENWAY W. - 1863 - 23/03/1863 – Age 54 - Pikeman. Tansey Green, Woodall and Co., Dudley, Worcestershire. Fall of Coal in thick coal. He was trying to throw the fall of Coal down when he was injured by it on the 24th. Died this day.

GREENWELL John - 1868 - 21/12/1868 – Age 11 – Screener. Page Bank, Bell Brothers, Willington, Durham. Crushed between waggons at bank.

GREENWOOD John - 1864 - 09/06/1864. Saydale, Rhodes and Co., Pontefract, Yorkshire. Explosion of firedamp in sinking shaft. 2 killed.

GREENWOOD W. - 1860 - 05/06/1860 - Miner. Dunkirk, Dunkirk Co. Dukinfield, Cheshire. Fell down from pit from mouthing.

GREEVES John - 1860 - 20/12/1860 – Age 20 – Timber leader. Minor Pit, South Hetton Coal Co., Hetton, Durham. Explosion of gas supposed to have been generated from the coals of the engine or boiler fire and not from gas generated in the workings of the mine. 22 killed.

GREGORY ? - 1864 - 04/07/1864. Blaenavon new pit, Monmouth. Fall of a stone.

GREGORY Frank - 1863 - 07/08/1863 – Age 30 - Collier. Rock Vein, TW Rhodes, Risca, Monmouth. Fall of Coal this day by which he was so injured and died 9th.

GREGORY G. - 1866 - 28/12/1866 - Miner. Dawley (ironstone), Coalbrookdale Co., Wellington, Shropshire. Fall of roof.

GREGORY Henry - 1864 - 23/09/1864 – Age 50 - Collier. Old Welton, Old Welton Coal Co., Old Welton, Somerset. Fall of roof whilst engaged in benching in 26 inch vein.

GREGORY Henry - 1867 - 04/04/1867 – Age 23 - Collier. Foxcote, Writhlington Co., Radstock, Somerset. Worked in the night shift and ascended in the morning with others some of whom thought he was half asleep. When about 20 yards of the top he fell out of the cage and was killed. Left a widow and two children who received £5 from The fund.

GREGORY Henry - 1869 - 02/03/1869 - Carpenter. Ince Hall, Ince Hall Coal and Cannel Co., Ince, Lancashire. Crushed between buffers of waggons.

GREGORY James - 1863 - 26/01/1863 – Age 36 - Collier. Cwm, Tillery, John Russell, Abertillery, Monmouth. Heavy fall of Coal. They had neither cropped their work nor timbered it up. With a top so smooth on its surface they were not safe a moment without cropping. 2 killed.

GREGORY James - 1864 - 02/07/1864 – Age 31 - Miner. New (ironstone), Blaenavon Iron Co., Blaenavon, Monmouth. Fall of ground which so injured his knee as to render amputation necessary but he died under the operation.

GREGORY James - 1866 - 01/02/1866 – Age 21 - Collier. Paulton Engine, William Evans and Co., Paulton, Somerset. Heavy fall of roof from overhead whilst he was engaged in getting the Coal. Died 2nd.

GREGORY John - 1861 - 25/11/1861 – Age 25 - Collier. Rose Bridge, Case and Morris, Wigan, Lancashire. Fall of roof.

GREGORY William - 1867 - 24/07/1867 – Age 40 - Miner. Anderton Hall, Dewhurst, Hoyle and Smethurst’s, Blackrod, Lancashire. A shot in the floor exploding as they were beginning to ram it. An iron rammer instead of a Copper or wood one was being used. 1 killed 2 hurt.

GREGORY William - 1867 - 25/06/1867 – Age 40 - Miner. How Bridge 7 Feet, John Fletcher and others, Atherton, Lancashire. Struck on firing a shot. He mistook a noise made by the fuse and being under the idea that it was the shot which had gone off he was returning to see what it had done when it went off. Died 8th July at Bolton, Infirmary.

GREY Rodger - 1866 - 12/01/1866 – Age 14 - Driver. Pelton, Lord Dunsany and Bros., Chester-le-Street, Durham. Collision of tubs while riding out. 5 killed.

GREY Thomas - 1860 - 02/03/1860 - Boy. Burradon Colliery, Burradon, Durham. Explosion of gas. 76 killed.

GREY William - 1863 - 13/01/1863 – Age 45- Roadsman. Varteg Hill, John Vipond, Pontypool, Monmouth. Went alone into an old heading to draw timber whilst so employed he probably brought down some of the roof for when found he was buried under a fall and quite dead.

GREYSON, Ellis - 1866 - 21/03/1866 – Age 26 - Fireman. Ravenhead, Bromilow Haddock and Co., St. Helens, Lancashire. Was trying to lift the engine over the centre by the fly wheel when he fell into the gearing.

GRICE W - 1863 - 15/11/1863 – Age 40 - Miner. Swanwick, WP Morewood, Alfreton, Derbyshire. Fall of roof.

GRICE W. - 1865 - 17/10/1865 – Chartermaster. Cam Hay, J Brayford, Walsall, Staffordshire. Fall of roof rock in 4-foot Coal pit.

GRIER Mark - 1865 - 23/07/1865 – Age 60 – Pitheadman. Portland, Eglington Iron Co., Hurlford, Ayrshire.  Was crushed at the screen between waggons.

GRIFFIN Henry - 1867 - 08/10/1867 – Age 19 - Collier. Tylery, South Wales Co. Ltd., Abertillery, Monmouth. Burned in an explosion of gas 8th Oct. Died 25th.

GRIFFIN J - 1864 - 14/05/1864 – Age 21 - Pikeman. Shepherds Brook, J Everson and Co., Stourbridge, Worcestershire. Fall of Coal (in thin Coal mine) about 12cwt. weight fell from a slip not previously seen till after the fall. Injured on the 4th. Died this day.

GRIFFIN J - 1864 - 15/03/1864 – Age 39 - Bandsman. Moat, Moat Colliery Co., Tipton, Staffordshire. Suffocated by a fall of dirt in Heathen Coal pit.

GRIFFIN J. - 1860 - 21/11/1860 – Age 50 - Banksman. Buck Pool, T. Crew, Wordsley, Staffordshire. Fell down shaft.

GRIFFIN P. - 1868 - 14/10/1868 - Hooker-on. Woodwell (ironstone), Messrs. Bloomer Bloxwich, Staffordshire. Injured by cage 19th Sept. Died this day.

GRIFFIN P. - 1869 - 16/02/1869 – Age 33 – Bondsman. Deep Moor (ironstone), J Bagnall and Sons, Walsall, Staffordshire. Fall of roof in Blue-flatt pit. Injured 10th. Died this day.

GRIFFIN T. - 1864 - 06/02/1864 – Age 30 - Pikeman. Nimmins, Dodd and Southan, Willenhall, Staffordshire. Fall of Coal in new mine. He left his work place and went under some holed Coal when a piece fell and killed him.

GRIFFIN W - 1867 - 27/11/1867 – Age 30 - Bandsman. Codsall Colliery, New British Iron Co., Corngreaves, Staffordshire. Fall of Coal in thick coal pit.

GRIFFIN William - 1861 - 13/12/1861 – Age 22 - Collier. Yate Old Long, Keeling and Nowell, Bristol, Somerset. Fall in the side of the work of stratum of bat which lies between the Coal and the strong top.

GRIFFITH David - 1862 - 31/12/1862 – Age 34 - Collier. Navigation, Nixon Taylor and Sons, Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (4 feet).

GRIFFITH Lewis - 1869 - 09/02/1869 – Age 42 - Collier. Fforchaman, Powell, Duffryn Steam Coal Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Killed by an explosion of gas. Griffith and Williams fired a shot which was a flagrant breach of rules as shots were prohibited. 3 killed.

GRIFFITH Thomas - 1861 - 23/08/1861 – Age 40 - Sinker. New Tredegar, T. Powell and Son, Newport, Monmouth. Fell out of bowk in sinking pit.

GRIFFITH Thomas - 1862 - 19/07/1862 – Age 51 - Collier. Mynydd, Newydd, Swansea Coal Co., Swansea, Glamorgan. Fall of roof.

GRIFFITH Thomas - 1863 - 26/06/1863 – Age 41 - Collier. Park, Thomas and Co., Neath, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas. 6 killed. Proceedings instituted before magistrates for a violation of the 1st General Rule not have been sufficient ventilation. Penalty of £40 imposed.

GRIFFITHS Anthony - 1868 - 12/11/1868 – Age 17 - Collier. Cwm, Noel Powell’s, Duffryn Steam Coal Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Killed by fall of roof.

GRIFFITHS Benjamin - 1860 - 11/04/1860 – Age 38 - Collier. Charles, C.H. Smith, Swansea, Glamorgan. Fall of stone from roof.

GRIFFITHS David - 1869 - 31/05/1869 – Age 34 - Collier. Abergwaun, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Killed by boiler explosion on surface. The boiler had worked for more than 20 years as was of bad construction having 2 flat ends, one of which gave way. 4 killed.

GRIFFITHS Edward - 1865 - 20/10/1865 – Age 47 - Collier. Gardden Lodge, Gardden Lodge Colliery Co., Ruabon, Denbigh. By rope breaking.

GRIFFITHS Edward - 1867 - 08/11/1867 – Age 17. Ferndale, David Davies and Son, Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas through one of the deceased taking the top off his lamp and exposing a naked light. 178 killed.

GRIFFITHS Evan - 1869 - 17/07/1869 – Age 34 - Collier. Tredegar, Tredegar Iron Co., Tredegar, Monmouth. Fall of roof in No.5 pit.

GRIFFITHS Griffith - 1862 - 19/02/1862 – Age 17. Cethin, William Crawshay, Merthyr, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas. 47 killed.

GRIFFITHS Henry - 1866 - 09/10/1866 – Age 29 - Sinker. New Bowson, Great Western Deep Coal Co. Ltd., Forest of Dean, Gloucester. Whilst sinking with others in the bottom of the deep pit a piece of stone fell from a great height (flew off by super incumbent pressure) and injured his head he died that night. The pit was put through extensive old workings and was not as well cased as I would have wished.

GRIFFITHS J - 1867 - 12/11/1867 - Pikeman. Homer Hill, S Evers and Sons, Stourbridge, Worcestershire. Explosion of firedamp. Died 19th. 11 killed.

GURNEY Farnham - 1869 - 22/10/1869 – Age 43. Newbury, Westbury Iron Co., Newbury, Somerset. Explosion of firedamp. 11 killed. At half past six in the morning there was an explosion at Newbury, Colliery, five miles from Frome, in which nine persons, were killed and four others were so severely injured that scarcely any hopes were entertained of their recovery. The men were going down for the day shift. The first warning that anything was wrong was a loud report from underground which could be heard for a mile and then a large amount of dense smoke appeared out of the up cast shaft. The pit head was soon covered by women and children crying and exhibiting the deepest grief. The bailiff, Mr Bake and the lampman descended the downcast shaft and proceeded in the direction of the cupola. They found the gas had ignited near a standing pillar of Coal. They found a Jacket belonging to one of the deceased in which there was a pipe and a quantity of tobacco. Left a wife and 5 children.
