The early faces were worked by hand got methods using props and bars and undercut coal blown down by explosives. Some areas of the take had a ‘bell metal’ floor, Shearers and Trepanners and hydraulic walking chocks were introduced but after working a large area the seam was abandoned due to rapid thickening of the middle dirt band and to the South and South West thinning of the seam and to the South East a total washout. Many of the short life panels stopped at faults or were troubled with intrusions in the roof.

Unfortunately top coal had to be left up to form a good roof and floor dirt cut to make a decent floor in parts total dirt extracted including middle dirt bands was more than coal extracted.
