South Wingfield Also Known As Wingfield Manor And Speedwell
Was Closed After 86 Years
On 31st December 1963 Wingfield Manor (name from 1906), was re-opened in 1894 by the South Wingfield Colliery Co as Speedwell but changed to South Wingfield in 1896, was closed after 69 years and merged with Swanwick, (Derbyshire). positions: SK35NE, No1 DC, 438936, 355368, No2 438990, 355560, The shaft being 249 yards (228m) deep. This pit was another with water problems the workings being close to the surface. It was situated due west of Alfreton on the old Roman Road Rykneld Street near Oakerthorpe. A McLane tip was used for the waste dirt. Pithead baths were opened in 1932. It was always classified as a small pit. The output was mainly by undercut, bored and fired and handfilled onto conveyors. The output was poor considering the number of men employed.
