A charge of Saxonite was placed in on a ledge of rock, covered by clay, and fired by an electric battery. Deceased, who was standing in the roadway 86 feet outbye of the shothole, was struck by the projected stones and so severely injured that he died almost immediately.

JONES William – 1907 – 23/12/1907 – Age 19 – Gellionen Slag picker, E Cullen, Glamorgan. He was assisting two men in pushing a waggon from beneath the screens and assuming a stooping position at the buffer, he did not notice an iron upright. He was crushed between the waggon and the upright of the screen support.

JONES William - 1907 - 26/03/1907 – Age 33 - New Tredegar Examiner, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Fall of roof in Big Vein near the entrance to the airway at the Top Heading of the new haulage district on No.1 side of the pit. While alone, making his examination before the commencement of the day shift, he was caught under the fall, probably while trying to get past the place instead of going round on another road. As he did not return at his usual time a search was made and he was found completely buried at this point where he had just passed a tram containing timber.

JONES William - 1908 - 11/12/1908 – Age 50 - Cynon Collier, Cynon Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face while removing coal away from the face of a top hole, a bell-stone, 6 feet 8 inches by 5 feet 6 inches, by 1 foot 4 inches, fell upon him. Wernddu Seam. Naked lights.

Deceased was cleaning up some dirt from the floor, at the buttock in a longwall, 5 feet in thickness of dirt being about 1 feet 6 inches. Deceased was struck on the head and died in a few minutes. The fall came from a gob break and a slip at right angles to the face and reeled a prop and a sprag, set to the roof from the top of the coal which is holed over or bannocked. The face seemed to have been well timbered but the combination of the slip break and an arched parting in clod forming the roof caused an unusual pressure from which the timbering could not withstand.

JONES William - 1909 - 09/08/1909 – Age 41 - Tydraw Overman, Cory Bros. and Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased and a repairer were examining the roof of a double parting when a piece of cliff, 15 feet by 10 feet by 4 feet thick, crushed out two pairs of timber and fell on them. Whether his sleeve became caught in the course of his work, or whether he fainted and fell across the rope is unknown. The arm became gangrenous and had to he amputated. He died from the effects of the injury on March 1st.

JONES William - 1909 - 12/06/1909 – Age 50 - Jamage Chargeman, Reps of late John Wedgwood, Staffordshire. This accident was caused by boring into an unexploded charge of Albionite (9 ounces) in a shot hole in a sinking pit. The shot was one of five which were connected up in series and fired electrically by a low tension battery near the end of the day shift. On examination it was found that the middle shot had missed. A second charge was then placed in the same hole on the top of the original stemming and was exploded separately. The work done by this second charge caused the chargeman on the shift to consider that both charges had gone. The work of cleaning up was preceded with for the remainder of the shift and was continued by the next shift, when after about 1.5 hours, the sump was ready for boring again. Phoenix, on instructions from Jones, commenced to bore in the socket of the original missed shot when almost immediately an explosion occurred, killing the former on the spot and causing injuries to Jones, from which he died on the 23rd instant. The practice of boring in sockets left by previous shots is to be condemned, for there is no guarantee that the whole of a charge has been exploded. The practice was afterwards discontinued in this sinking. 2 killed.

JONES William - 1909 - 21/07/1909 – Age 41 - Bertie Overman, Lewis Merthy Consolidated Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. He worked with a timberman, and was filling stones when a stone 3 feet by 2 feet 4 inches by 2 feet in thickness fell upon him from the high side of the roadway. It appeared that a shot had been fired at the place two hours before the accident occurred, and it is probable that the concussion and an old pressure break in the side assisted to release the stone. He died from shock, his injuries being a fractured pelvis and internal mischief. Nine feet Anthracite. Safety lamps.

JONES William Henry - 1909 - 29/11/1909 – Age 64 - Abercarn Labourer, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. He was putting a tram of timber on the cage at the level of the ground (lower landing) and through a misunderstanding the banksman, who was in the upper landing about 16 to 17 feet above him, but not in view knocked the cage away, causing him to fall with the tram down the shaft. The banksman clearly caused the accident even if he was not seriously to blame.

A driver, 50 yards behind him, heard him shout for help and on going to his assistance found him unconscious under the first tub which was off the rails. At the place of the accident the road dipped out bye at the rate of 1 in 20, and it was the custom for the drivers to put in two lockers before coming to this part of the road. None were used on this occasion though there were two on the top of the second tub, and it is probable that the pony was unable effectual to control the tubs, and that the deceased fell or was thrown off the shafts whilst the tubs were running at an excessive speed.

JONES WT – 1901 – 09/08/1901 – Age 13 – Glyncorrwg Colliers boy, Glyncorrwg Colliery Co., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face, the rock roof, over an area of 100 square feet, fell killing deceased. There were no props under this portion of roof. No.2 Rhondda seam.

The speed at which the rope was travelling was 2.75 miles an hour and the refuge holes were in the required distance of each other.
