JONES Henry - 1906 - 19/09/1906 – Age 31 - Deep Duffryn Repairer, Nixons Navigation Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. The rope which was 3,000 yards long was ¾ inches in diameter made of patent improved crucible steel and had been at work for 15 months. It was thought that the front tram had got off the rails and so put extra strain on the rope. Deceased was found partly in a manhole.

JONES Herbert - 1908 - 28/08/1908 – Age 29 - Cymmer Old Collier, Insoles Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased, having loosened 6 sprags which were set against a face slip, was trying to get a portion of the slip down with a bar, when a much larger quantity of coal than he expected fell, knocked out five posts, and so caused a fall of roof coal, 22 feet by 5 feet by 20 inches thick, which killed him on the spot. The roof coal had slips on three sides, and a smooth above. Four feet seam.

Deceased and another man were boring a hole for a shot when an explosion occurred injuring them both. Jones died 30th September from shock. It seemed that a portion or the whole of an unexploded charge must have been in the ground and was bored into by these men. Nothing had been done at the spot for some months it was said. Ammonite was the explosive in use.

JONES Hugh - 1901 - 24/07/1901 – Age 44 - Ffaldu Ripper, Ffaldu Collieries Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road where deceased and his partner were ripping. The scaffold, supported by two capstan ropes in the shaft, which they were engaged widening, had also three plugs left in the side of the shaft, tilted on one side and the two deceased persons fell to the pit bottom, a distance of 60 yards, and were killed. At the inquiry it was recommended that they should in future attach the capstan ropes to the scaffold at four points instead of only two. 2 killed.

JONES Isaac - 1907 - 10/12/1907 – Age 65 - Marine Lamp carrier, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. On his way to the pit, carrying some lamps, he suddenly fell on a level and roomy road. There seems to be some doubt as to whether he got giddy, or slipped, or stumbled. He seems from the result of a post-mortem to have been suffering from pneumonia at the time and to have been in a very bad state of health. He was seen by a doctor the same day and complained of pains which might have been due to the pneumonia. The shock of falling possibly brought things to it crisis and accelerated death a little but the post mortem showed that he would probably have died very shortly in any case. It scarcely seems a case to be returned as a mining accident. At the same time I do not like to say that is not comprised.

JONES Isiah - 1904 - 10/02/1904 – Age 16 - Bedlinog No.2 Collier boy, Guest Keen and Nettlefolds Ltd., Glamorgan. At face, cliff, 6.5 feet by 6 feet by 27 inches thick crushed out two pairs of timbers and fell on deceased. It was part of the rippings and so had one end loose. Deceased who having gone down in a bowk got out on to the scaffold or cradle in a sinking shaft, slipped or overbalanced and fell backwards into the water six or eight feet below. He does not appears to have risen to the surface again probably owing to his wearing a waterproof coat and leggings at the time and also having some heavy tools in his pockets.

JONES James - 1900 - 02/01/1900 – Age 20 - Merthyr Vale No.2 Collier, Nixons Navigation Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall at face coal roof, 10 feet x 10 feet x 3.25 feet thick. The wheels of the empty tub were fouling the line. He died the next day.

He was riding on the first tub of four full ones of coal coming down a slope with only one scotch instead of two in the wheels when the first tub appears to have upset upon the deceased fatally injuring him.

Deceased was injured about the head and back by a fall of roof stone in his working place in the Harvey seam longwall and he never worked after the accident. He was confined to bed for the first fortnight and then was able to walk about with a stick. On May 17th he came back from Whitley Convalescent Homes, where he spent three weeks, intending to resume work but he took a chill on the 19th May and pneumonia set in from which he died. No inquest was held.

JONES James  - 1905 - 13/03/1904 – Age 40 - Wigan Junction Collier, Wigan Junction Colliery Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. When working at the face of a roadway he appeared to have liberated a stone running with the face and a stone from between two slips fell from the roof upon him before he could timber it safely.

JONES James - 1906 - 08/05?/1906 – Age 29 - Abergorky No.3 Collier, Burnyeat Brown and Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face, cliff, 17 feet by 3 feet by 1 foot thick, fell from between two parallel slips which ran up until they met. As a journey of eight loaded coal trams were being hauled by steam power up a slant having a gradient of 1 in 2, the rope gave way in the capping, and the trams ran back down the incline for 270 yards. Jones was clearing away fallen debris from the sides of the slant when the accident occurred, and he was struck down by coal falling from the runaway trams. He was close to a manhole but had no time to get up into it. The rope was 1.1/8 inches in diameter, and was secured into a 21.75 inches capping by five rivets 4.25 inches apart. No barhook used.

JONES James A. – 1908 – 13/08/1909 – Age 47 – Celynen Master haulier, Newport Abercarn Black Vein Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. He appears to have strained (ruptured) himself on this date by lifting a train, he continued to work until August 24th, but not afterwards and died on January 22nd, 1909, from exhaustion caused by cancer. There appears to have been a conflict of opinion among medical authorities as to whether cancer can or cannot result from the effect of a strain or rupture. The doctor who attended the deceased did not apparently diagnose cancer until 20th November. The medical evidence at the inquest the doctor who attended him was to the effect that he died from cancer due to a strain, or if cancerous germs existed before that, death was accelerated by the strain. I understand that the other doctors present at the post mortem (which was made by the doctor attending deceased) dissented from the views expressed, but they were not called by the coroner.

The fall which was 2 feet thick extended over an area about 10 feet by 3 feet and previous to falling was supported by the coal standing on the sprags.
