The road crossed this trouble and the pony putter in going outbye got off the way and deceased came out to help to get the tub on the road leaving his lamp at the face. A fall of roof, possibly caused by the derailed tub loosening a prop and deceased was pinned behind the tub.

KANE Patrick - 1906 - 26/09/1906 – Age 21 - Dalmeny Oil Shale Drawer, Dalmeny Oil Co. Ltd., Linlithgow. Deceased was going outbye with a loaded tub, when a piece of shale fell away from the side, and striking him, caused injuries to which he succumbed about three hours later.

When travelling down an incline, on the surface, to his home at 6 o'clock at night he was run over by a train of full waggons and killed. He had travelled this incline for more than 20 years and knew the trains were being run on the night in question. From the position of his body and a lamp and basket he was carrying it appeared that he had been getting out of the middle of the way and had slipped and before he could get up again the waggons had caught him.

KAY George - 1904 - 10/10/1904 – Age 64 - Rosedale Miner, Carlton Iron Co. Ltd., North Yorkshire. While drilling a hole a piece of stone fell from the face causing slight injury to his head and leg. Gangrene set in and he died on the 19th inst.

He was getting over a shaft, making 55 revolutions a minute, when the top coat which he was wearing caught the nuts of it coupling. He was whirled round the shaft and killed. The shaft should have been better protected.

Kaye and another trammer were bringing 3 empty tubs from a passbye when the coupling between the 2nd and 3rd tub fouled the capel of the haulage rope which was travelling in the opposite direction. The tubs were jerked on to Kaye and fatally injured him.

KAYE J. - 1905 - 16/06/1905 – Age 68 - Newmarket Haigh Collier, Newmarket Haigh Moor Colliery Ltd., Yorkshire. He was getting coal at the face when the roof fell on him and injured him so severely that he died the same day. The fall disclosed a slip in the form of a pothole measuring 6 feet 10 inches by 4 foot thick in the centre. The roof should have been better supported, the distance had exceeded the distance under the Special Rules of Timbering and also neglected to set two props where the night deputy had chalked the roof for them.

KAYE John A. - 1902 - 03/01/1902 – Age 14 - Whitley Clough Hurrier, Whitley Clough Colliery Co., Yorkshire. Died 13th January. Slightly grazed his knee when at work. Blood poisoning supervened.

KEARNEY James - 1902 - 15/01/1902 – Age 26 - High Burn, Sandstone Quarry Labourer, Thomas Boiston, Co.Durham. A wooden gangway extended from a point where baring was being moved for some distance into the Quarry to a disused part where the baring was tipped from small wagons running on rails laid on the gangway. A light wire rope supported at intervals extended at a height of 3 feet along each side of the gangway and acted as a fence. Deceased and another man were bringing forward a loaded wagon and are said to have been going too fast. The wagon jumped the rails and fell a distance of 40 feet to the bottom of the Quarry carrying both men with it. The jury recommended a stronger fence.

KEARNEY John - 1905 - 16/01/1905 – Age 15 - Bold No.3 Haulage hand, Collins Green Colliery Co., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The five persons were killed and thirteen injured in an overwinding accident whilst they were descending the shaft. The cage went beyond the usual point and struck a scaffold below. 5 killed.

KEARNEY Thomas - 1903 - 28/07/1903 – Age 32 - Rainhill, Sandstone Quarry Crane driver, Rainhill Red Sandstone Co., St Helens, Lancashire. He lost control of his engine the driving-wheel broke and the piece's flew in all directions. He was hit by some of them. Died the same day.

An incline shaft from the surface is used exclusively for steam and discharge pipes for pumps and upcast and an examination is made weekly by two men by means of a carriage lowered and raised by a steam engine on the surface. Owing to the steam pipes and exhaust steam from the pumps etc. underground the temperature is 109 degrees F. As usual two men descended on the carriage to make the inspection and when some distance down something went wrong with the carriage, which caused it to leave the rails, and one of the men fell to the bottom the other man attempted to climb to the surface but becoming exhausted by the exertion and heat he sat down, and was found with his right foot firmly fixed between a pipe and side wall, he was quite dead. The men were accustomed to the work. 2 killed.

KEAVEY Patrick - 1904 - 01/09/1904 – Age 28 - Roman Camp oil shale Miner, Broxburn Oil Co. Ltd., Linlithgow. Deceased had fired a shot and was off the shale when a part of the vees of a hitch fell over on him.

Deceased and another man were boring a hole on a ledge, 55 feet up the Quarry, when a stone, 4.5 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet thick, fell off the vertical face, and killed him. The foreman had examined the place two hours previously and considered it safe. After four days of heavy frost a thaw had set in that day which I think caused the stone to fall.

KEEFE Robert - 1906 - 05/01/1906 – Age 15 - Gilfach Collier boy, Rhymney Iron Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face, cliff, 6 feet by 6 feet by 1 foot 6 inches thick, fell on deceased while he was at work. At least five props were discharged by the stone. Brithdir seam.

KEEGAN John - 1908 - 16/11/1908 – Age 58 - New Bracepeth Stoneman, Cochrane and Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. He was doing repairs on an engine plane. He had taken out a baulk and was preparing to put a new one in, when a large stone canted out the temporary timber and fell on him.

KEELEY Thomas - 1906 - 06/04/1906 – Age 28 - Douglas Bank Hooker on, Rose Bridge and Douglas Bank Collieries Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. While he was attempting to push a tub further in the cage, with his foot, and pulling down the bow, around the end of tub; he appears to have got his foot fast, after telling his mate to signal the winder to start. He was carried up about six yards, to the shelter covering, where he fell back down the shaft into the sump. He died from pneumonia, accelerated by the accident, April 17th, 1906.

KEELING Albert J. - 1907 - 07/07/1907 – Age 15 - Celynen Engine cleaner, Newport Abercarne Black Vein Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Killed in the winding engine house, No.3 Pit. He appears to have been cleaning some part of the engine although not exactly proved to have been so at the moment. His head was crushed between the steam brake lever of the reversing handle underneath the platform six feet above the floor of the engine house on which the engineman stands. How he came to be caught is unknown as the engineman was letting men down at the time and could not see him.

KEELING Charles - 1904 - 09/01/1904 – Age 25 - Streetley Stallman, Shire Oaks Colliery Co., Nottinghamshire. Fall of roof. Deceased was laying rails in advance of a coal-cutting machine driven by compressed air when a large fall of roof occurred and killed him.

He continued work, the day out played the following day, and the day following that he saw Dr. Enright. Blood poisoning ensued from which he died on the 22nd inst.

KEENAN John - 1900 - 03/10/1900 – Age 46 - Seghill Hewer, Joseph Laycock and Co., Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was hewing when some stone, which was slightly overhanging the coal, fell away at a slip. The deputy and deceased examined the stone shortly before the accident and considered it sufficiently timbered as it was secured by two props and a headtree but these were canted out.

KEENAN John - 1904 - 08/09/1904 – Age 32 - Kenmuir Miner, J Dunn and Stephen Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof in working place. The part of the working place in which the accident happened was not propped as required by the regulations.

KEIGHLEY Tom - 1907 - 10/1905/1907 – Age 16 - Middleton Haulage lad, Middleton Estate and Colliery Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. It was his duty to watch the tubs, rope and pulleys at a slight curve in a haulage road in order that a signal might be given if anything was out of order. A bye-workman, who was laying rails in a cross gate out of the haulage road saw the deceased and spoke to him, he noted him walk in-bye looking at the pulleys in the ordinary way and about two minutes afterwards heard him shout. The rope was stopped as quickly as possible and the man went to the lad. He found him upon his side under the first of two full tubs and the tub had run into the road side. His lamp was lying upon the side three yards in front. The only explanation of the accident is that the lad caught his clog against a sleeper when walking by the side of the full tubs and stumbled in front. The haulage road was a good one being 11 feet high and 6 feet 6 inches wide and the endless rope haulage speed was about two miles per hour.

KEIR David - 1906 - 06/03/1906 – Age 35 - Giffnock Pump attendant, Giffnock Collieries Ltd., Renfrewshire. He fell to the pit bottom in some unexplained manner from a stage in the shaft where a steam pump was placed.

KELHAM J. - 1901 - 26/06/1901 – Age 15 - Rotherham Main Driver, John Brown and Co., Yorkshire. Found dead under full tubs. Appeared to have been riding on the shafts.

KELL John - 1908 - 23/04/1908 – Age 15 - Byers Green Landing lad, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. This accident was due to a mistake in the signals. The hauling engineman thought he had received a signal for a far-off landing, whereas the signal he was intended to receive was for a landing not so far off and the ropes and points were changed for this latter landing. The boy was standing near the return-wheel, ready to receive the set, but it instead of being stopped, was hauled up against the wheel framing, and he was caught and killed. The signalling arrangements have since been altered, and telephones have also been installed, with a view of preventing a repetition of such an accident.

KELLET Samuel - 1905 - 04/10/1905 – Age 58 - Washington Deputy, Washington Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Died October 25th, 1906. On 4th October, 1905, deceased, while acting as deputy, was firing by battery shuts of bellite for hewers. He made some complaint of being affected by the fumes and seemed unwell in the pit. After he came to the surface, at the end of his shift, he was assisted home by the under manager and others. He told the under manager that he was troubled with wind on the stomach but made no reference then to the fumes. He was off work two or three days and was attended by a doctor. He resumed his former work of deputy, but in a few days and was given lighter work as a chargeman in the night shift as he was too slow in his movements to get through a deputy’s duties. As chargeman he continued to fire bellite shots. After 12th September, 1906, he worked no more. On 20th September, 1906, a medical certificate was given that he was suffering from heart trouble and that his condition ‘had probably been detrimentally affected by inhalation of fumes from explosives.’ An inquest was held after a post-mortem examination which did not bear out the certificate, as the doctor’s report contained the following: ‘extensive disease of the heart and blood vessels of many years duration and that the unanimous opinion of the medical men present that the disease was independent of any accident whatever but was entirely due to natural causes.’ The Jury found in accordance with this opinion.

KELLETT H. - 1900 - 26/01/1900 – Age 31 - Barrow Collier, Barrow Haematite Steel Co., Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

KELLETT John - 1904 - 11/04/1904 – Age 58 - Wheldale Collier, Wheldale Coal Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. KELLEY Thomas - 1909 - 07/07/1909 – Age 32 - Sharlston Haigh Moor Coal getter, New Sharlston Collieries Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. Whilst in the act of drawing timber a large stone fell upon him. He was using a hammer instead of the proper timber drawing appliances.

KELLIGHAN Thomas - 1901 - 27/11/1901 – Age 28 - Bentrigg Bottomer, Larkhill Collieries Ltd., Lanarkshire. He appears to have been crossing the cage seat when the cage came upon him. He was alone at the time.

KELLY Edward - 1904 - 30/09/1904 – Age 17 - Wearmouth Driver, Wearmouth Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Deceased who had worked seven weeks underground, only part of which time he had acted as a driver, was coming outbye on a level road sitting on the limbers of his pony which was drawing a tub filled with stones. When just past a part of the road where one of the props was within 64 inches of the side of the tub he either got his head caught by it or he fell off the limbers or possibly he had been struck by the pony which was addicted to kicking, and had been known to kick above the limbers. He was found lying sideways across the rails his head, which was badly crushed clear of the tubs and his face inbye. The tub was on the rails and the pony still connected to it standing quietly. The Local Inspectors reported that it was a pure accident.

KELLY Frederick - 1900 - 22/06/1900 – Age 39 - Craig-yr-hesg Quarry Quarryman, Mackay and Davies, Glamorgan. Struck by a stone about 12 lbs. weight which broke from a block barred off the face above when it reached the bottom. Deceased was 54 feet away from the face of the Quarry when struck.

KELLY James - 1901 - 04/11/1901 – Age 20 - Holmewood Loader, Hardwick Coal Co., Derbyshire. Deceased was run over by a runaway empty tub which a pony driver was attempting to lower down an inclined roadway by hand instead of attaching his pony to the same.

KELLY John - 1903 - 09/02/1903 – Age 29 - Stanrigg Miner, United Collieries Ltd., Lanarkshire. Explosion of firedamp.

KELLY Patrick - 1904 - 05/02/1904 – Age 49 - Ashton Moss Collier, New Moss Colliery Ltd., Lancashire. At face of working place, from a known slip. One prop would probably have prevented it happening, it ought to have been set. The distance along the face without props was 10 feet 6 inches and from props to face 6 feet, the timbering regulations being 5 feet maximum. (Average roof).

KELLY Thomas - 1902 - 08/04/1902 – Age 37 - Sirhowy No.7 Incline rider, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. He was crushed by the descending cage while crossing the pit bottom to stop a horse on the other side that was starting away. He appears to have acted on the spur of the moment as there was a covered way at the side.

KELLY Thomas - 1904 - 03/03/1904 – Age 48 - St. John’s Collier, Locke and Co., (Newland) Ltd., Yorkshire. He was holing coal when a fall of coal and overhanging clod fell on him and killed him. He had one sprag set but should have had two.

KELLY Timothy - 1901 - 11/06/1901 – Age 38 - Manners Stallman, Manners Colliery Co., Derbyshire. He was pushing a full tub in the gate road when he slipped down and injured himself. The verdict of the coroner's jury was that death was caused by pneumonia preceded by pleurisy and that the pleurisy was caused by the slip deceased had made in the pit. He died on the 20th. and the post-mortem examination showed that there was no bruise upon the body nor any sign of injury.

KELLY William - 1900 - 25/01/1900 – Age 28 - Dalziel No.2 Miner, Wishaw Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of coal and stone from the roof. Another man was injured.

Died 29th May.

KELSAY James - 1908 - 09/01/1908 – Age 32 - South Hindley Timber drawer, Henry Musgrave Ltd., Yorkshire. He was drawing timber from the waste when a fall of stone occurred and killed him. He was not using a "dog and chain." If he had done so it is probable that he would not have been caught by the fall.

KELSEY John - 1903 - 03/04/1903 – Age 43 - Boldon Shaftman, Harton Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Deceased was examining the furnace shaft at the Maudlin seam. The shaft is sunk to the Hutton seam 24 fathoms further, but the cages only run to the Maudlin. He climbed down to a scaffold formed of four loose planks 9 feet long by 9 inches by 3 inches, and supported on beams at the ends and centre a few feet below the Maudlin, to examine the keps, and fell from there to the Hutton seam. Part of one of the planks which formed the scaffold fell with him. How he came to fall could not be ascertained. Probably some soot and salt (formed by the evaporation of brackish water) had fallen from the side of the shaft and broken the plank before he stepped on to it. The Local Inspectors reported that, in their opinion, he "accidentally fell." The jury made a recommendation as to not employing a deaf waiter-on, and thought a shaft man should not work alone.

KELSO John - 1904 - 09/02/1904 – Age 49 - Feriegare No.2 Manager, Archibald Russell, Lanarkshire. Caught by the cutting bar of a Hurds coal cutting machine.

KELVIN Isaac – 1906 – 02/02/1906 – Age 62 – Ty Trist Collier, Tredgar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. The bursting of a blood vessel near the heart. He had cut his head slightly when at work at Ty Trist Colliery on the 2nd and it was attempted to prove that death resulted from this injury but the medical evidence was clear that it was not so.

KEMP Alfred – 1901 – 10/09/1901 – Age 33 – Llanbradradach No.2 Ostler, Cardiff Steam Coal Collieries Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. This explosion formed the subject of special report by Mr. J. S. Martin. Cd885. 8 killed. some injured.

KEMP Frank – 1907 – 18/11/1907 – Age 16 – East Pool & Agar, Tin Miner, East Pool & Agar United Mines Adventurers, Cornwall. He, with five others, was working in a stope about midway between the 228 and 210 fathom levels on a stage. While drilling a stone fell from the back of the 225 fathom level and struck the stage, carrying it away and precipitating all the men but one (who clung to a chain) to the 215 fathom level. The stone is alleged to have burst off suddenly as the result of an air-blast, as it is said to have shown no signs of being loose two or three days before when examined by the under agent.

KEMPSTER William – 1907 – 21/01/1907 – Age 24 – Victoria Collier, Mrs T Brocklehurst,  Lancashire. The drawing road roof fell, 10 feet long, 8 feet wide, 3 feet 7 inches thick. The fireman examining, before work commenced, found roof weighting near kept colliers back; afterwards the day fireman found the roof quiet and set men to work at 6.30 am., a few minutes after the undermanager passing up this roadway found roof weighting, shouted to the men to stop at the face, day fireman and a dataller were with the colliers at the face, they foolishly disregarded the undermanager's order, rushed from the face under the weighting roof, they got through but deceased following their bad example was buried under the fall. Six props were brought down by the fall, bars might have prevented this. (Good roof).

KENDAL George – 1906 – 23/08/1906 – Age 47 – Nook Dataller, Astley and Tyldesley Collieries Ltd., Lancashire. In main haulage brow preparing to take out a length of old arching which had settled and flattened until there was not sufficient tub height underneath, three props set on this flat unsupported arch were probably knocked out by a fall of side from a defined slip, this led to the collapse of the arch. Isaac Waterworth, working with deceased, his ribs fractured, yet bravely returned to extricate deceased, then alive; further falls caused Waterworth to step back, but again and again he returned to the rescue until compelled to seek assistance.

KENDALL John – 1907 – 07/10/1907 – Age 44 – Livox, Limestone Quarry Quarryman, Thomas Richardson, Devon. Some large blocks of rock, dislodged from the face on the previous day rested, on a ledge about 30 feet from the bottom of the Quarry. Deceased, a comrade, who was engaged pinching one of these blocks towards the edge, apparently disturbed one of the others, about 2 tons in weights, which toppled over on him and caused his death.

KENDALL John Nelson – 1908 – 06/02/1908 – Age 28 – Moewray, Iron Ore Miner, Cammel Laird and Co. Ltd., Cumberland. A huge mass of roof suddenly fell. No timber was used in the place as the roof was considered thoroughly sound and strong.
