BROCK Charles - 1908 - 07/07/1908 – Age 27 - South Duffryn No.1 Labourer. Hills Plymouth Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased was cleaning the road on a haulage level. The rider of an out-going journey brought his tram to a stand, near a junction and hearing groans looked back and saw the deceased lying on the side of the road free from the trams. His lamp and shovel were found on the road 40 yards inbye, and he had presumably been dragged along for that distance. The rider saw no light ahead and felt no bump. They had been instructed to work at the bottom of the Quarry and not to go on the heap of stones but he went about 3 yards up. He was sitting on a flat stone holding a drill for another man to strike when the stone slipped down and caused him to fall. The stone followed him and fell on the lower part of his abdomen causing severe internal injuries. Died same day.

This was done and while in the cage seat the cage was lowered upon him. He was alone at the time. The engineman alleged that he received the signal to lower the cage again.
BRODIE William - 1900 - 21/05/1900 – Age 35 - Arniston Miner. Arniston Coal Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. A strip of about 3 foot in width was being taken off one side of an old longwall road for the purpose of straightening it. Fall of ground from above, where he and another were attending to a rock drill. One of his comrades was also injured two others jumped clear on receiving warning. There was some water making at the place and this would tend to allow or even cause sudden falls to occur. The foreman and the men all allege that they considered the place quite safe.
BROOK Frederick - 1906 - 26/11/1906 – Age 39 - Wharncliffe Woodmoor Collier. Wharncliffe Woodmoor Colliery Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. The deceased was drawing some back props in the goaf when a large piece of stone fell, displacing some timber, and caught him. There were two slips which could not be seen before the stone fell. This is the first fatal accident that has occurred underground at this colliery, and it has been working more than 25 years.
BROOK James - 1908 - 16/03/1908 – Age 60 - Wharncliffe Woodmoor Collier. Wharncliffe Woodmoor Colliery Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. On June 29th, 1907 he was walking out-bye at the end of his shift, when he was caught by a set of empty tubs. The accident was not considered serious, but dropsy supervened and proved fatal.

BROOKE Edmund - 1903 - 26/11/1903 – Age 67 - Meldon Limestone Quarry Labourer. London and South Western Railway Co., Devon. While charging a hole, with presumably partially or completely frozen gelignite, it exploded killing him on the spot. A warming pan was provided but apparently not used on this occasion, although only a few weeks before he was shown the pan and was told by the foreman that it was needed regularly. These men are probably more of the navvy class than Quarrymen and as in or navvy work there are no regulations on the subject of blasting, it is difficult to get them to carry out the rules when engaged in quarries.
BROOKES Henry - 1907 - 05/04/1907 – Age 56 - St. George’s Collier. Astley and Tyldesley Collieries Ltd., Lancashire. Fall at working place from between two slips, both clearly defined and visible, he ought to have had two props set. Fireman had not made a second visit and did not always do so. (Average roof).

Deceased and another person were drawing out a chock, after capping two props in front of it, when the roof gave way from where they had drawn the two props. They had set nothing to protect themselves thinking the roof safe. This shows that the best human judgement cannot be depended upon and men should not work under an unsupported roof. He failed, but expressing his determination to have the prop out, he began to loosen it with a drawing hammer. Having loosened it, he was turning round to come back when a large frame of stone fell and fatally injured him. The stone in falling canted out the two near props. A vertical ladder attached to one of the sets of buntons afforded means access to the staple. Two shots of carbonite had been fired by electricity 10 minutes before the accident and deceased was climbing the ladder with the cable to connect it to another shot of carbonite when he fell broke through a scaffold at the Low Main where his marrow was and fell to the Hutton seam.

The roof stone is very short and further falls occurred before his body was recovered. The place was very wet and heavily timbered and it appeared that the tubs had been catching props and this was the probable cause of the accident. The jury thought that sufficient attention had not been paid by the owners to complaints as to the tubs catching the timber. The colliery is now abandoned.

They drew out two pairs of timber when going to supper, about 1 am., to let the roof fall and were working at it after supper when the accident occurred. This class of work has to be done and all that is practicable is to employ experienced and careful men at such jobs.
BROWN Martin - 1904 - 19/12/1904 – Age 21 - Burradon, Lizzie Pony putter. Burradon and Coxlodge Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. This train passes near the Burradon Colliery where deceased lived and for some time the Burradon and Coxlodge Company's miners living at Burradon and working at the Lizzie Pit were allowed to use it, a halt being made near Burradon Colliery and at the Lizzie Pit junction. This privilege had been formally with drawn on the 16th December and notices posted in the carriages to that effect. On December, 19th the next working day deceased made use of the train but as it no longer stopped at the Lizzie Pit junction he jumped off the fore part of the second carriage while it was going at a speed of about eight miles per hour and stumbling on alighting he fell and one of the last wheels of the second carriage passed over his legs. Deceased was hewing in a place, the road into which inclined at the rate of 1 in 9. The putter brought an empty tub with his pony to a siding, 16 yards from the face, and went with his pony to the face and brought away a full tub. When past the empty tub, in the siding, he left the pony and full tub and took the empty tub to the face and placed a chock before it. He then followed his pony outbye and heard the full tub, which had become detached from pony's limbers, coming back; he threw himself clear, and the full tub dashed into the empty tub, forcing it over a chock against the face and crushing the deceased. In dipping places a ‘cow’ or iron bar, 18 inches long, with a link at one end and pointed at the other is hooked on to the crook of the tub so as to stop it running back, should it become detached from the pony limbers. In this case the putter stated he used the ‘cow’ but that it had not acted. He further said he found the ‘cow’ lying 24 yards from the face after the accident, but Mr. Abbott found a cow next day partly buried in coal next the face. The Local Inspectors while reporting that they thought it a 'pure accident’ recommended that the cows be lengthened to 2 feet and, instead of a pointed end be provided with two claws.
