New Winnings pit (Denby Drury-Lowe)

Well well. I just can't believe the photo's of New Winnings pit put on the site by Erika Belcher.

I worked at Denby Colliery 50 years ago (at the Kilburn Pit site) and have just finished writing a book documenting the history of Denby Drury-Lowe colliery, the manuscript being with the printer as I write. I appealed via the local press for photo's of New Winnings, which I remember well, a few years ago but to little avail. Erika's photo's are a revelation but have surfaced too late for inclusion in the book.

My book is entitled 'For Good Men, Denby Drury-Lowe Colliery 1839-1968' and will be available in early August. Should any contributor to this site require a copy they will be available at a reduced rate.

I had the pleasure of meeting Pete Smith yesterday when he dropped off a copy of his new book about "Mining in the Denby Area". One of the best of the genre that I've read, couldn't put it down last night. I recommend it and he seemed to be a very interesting gentleman in his own right.

Regards, Mark Heath
