HUGHES John – 1905 – 31/05/1905 – Age 31 – Emlyn Collier, Emlyn Anthracite Colliery Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face; while working away a piece of coal at face of level, a portion of the clod roof, 3.5 feet x 2.5 feet and 14 inches thick, fell, smothering him in the coal on the floor. After having fired a springing shot in a hole, 16 feet deep, deceased and his son recharged the hole with 5lbs. of gelignite, poured water and small rubbish down, and lit the fuse. Before the deceased got clear, the charge exploded and killed him on the spot. It is very probable that some of the gelignite was frozen, as it was admitted that 10 cartridges had been discarded as unfit for use. There was no warming on the ground.

While setting a prop or foreset under the end of one of the stretchers, preparatory to getting the rock down at the end of it, a large fall occurred, partly from the side and partly from the roof reeling the stretcher and prop and two other stretchers. It is probable that the jar caused by knocking the prop into position disturbed the strata and caused it to fall.

HUGHES John - 1908 - 17/01/1908 – Age 37 - Tirdonkin Collier, Tirdonkin Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. They worked on a half moon stage attached to the top of the cage. About 2.30 pm. they descended after having been up to dinner, and were getting out of the cage at the 4 feet landing to get on to the cage top, when deceased did not step far enough, and fell down the pit.
