My Great Grandfather, William Wilson, died in a pit accident at Babbington Colliery 1920s, 30's

Hi,

I am researching my family history.  My Great Grandfather died in a pit accident in the 1946.  I guess that it would have been around the late 20s, 30's.  He worked at the Babbington Colliery, his name was William Wilson.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thank you

Joanne

It is probably not your William Wilson, at least 10 years too early but it is all I can find so far:-

William Wilson, aged 57 died 5 March 1912. He was a Deputy at Tibshelf, owned by  Babbington Coal Co.

Notes:    He was acting as pony driver during the strike and was taking dirt from road repairs to a stall. He was found on the top of a tub of dirt wedged in up to the roof at a low place where the clearance was only 8 inches. Riding was not allowed.

I only have two William Wilsons  the above Tibshelf one and:-

William Wilson  46, of 267 Nottingham Road, Hill Top, Eastwood. William died  on 22nd October 1946,  Fall of roof at Babbington pit.
The inquest was held on 25th October 1946 at the Colliers Arms Inn, Cinderhill.

Hi I am trying to find information about my Grandfather George Evans who was an official at Brackley Colliery Middle Hulton near Bolton prior to 1940 and also my father Ronald Evans who also worked there until about 1945 or 46 I was always told that George was an under manager or manager but I don’t know if that was true or not.

Looking for Info about the Doyle family, Canklow Rotherham Main Colliery 1899

Hello,
I am trying to trace the Doyle family who were employed in Canklow at the colliery. My grandfather John Doyle lived at 20 Castle Avenue when married yr 1899 at St Bedes Catholic Church Rotherham.  His father Edward Doyle probably lived at the same address and worked in the mine.

Does anyone have any records of the Canklow village and its inhabitants in the 1890’s?

I know about the accident at the mine but they were not involved so far as I know.

John Doyle married into the Connor family who probably lived in Canklow and would be part of an Irish immigrant community.

Yours hopefully

Hi
Do you have accident records at Hickleton Main Colliery.
I am looking for information about the death of my grandfather ( Edwin George Dewey) who I believe may have worked at Hickleton and was killed in 1910.
Any information would be gratefully appreciated.

Kind regards

Bill Harvey

Hickleton Main Colliery

Hi Fionn, Saw the Dewey query. Three fatal’s 1910 at Hickleton Main,

  • Charles Henry Richards 07-March-1910.
  • John Brady 20-Sep-1910
  • Tom Ramsden  07-Nov-1910

No Dewey.
Checked Winstanley site only one Dewey listed 1890 s not that Christian name. Free BMD lists only one Edwin G Dewey 1905-1915 December 1910 in Wilshire

1800s, Derbyshire, what did a stallman do?

Please can you help me with a mining term? One of my ancestors is listed as being a 'stallman' at a Derbyshire colliery in the late 1800's. Can you tell me what a stallman is/does? Any help you can give would be much appreciated. Thank you

Jackie Giddings.

Stallman:- was either a sub-contractor or miner at the coal face in charge of a "stall" or narrow working place.

Nottinghamshire Miners, Bentinck, Brinsley, Pye Hill, Underwood pits - Family History

I have recently started researching my family history.

Most of my male relations on my mother's side, from my grandfather back to around 1820, were Nottinghamshire miners - probably at the Bentinck, Brinsley and Pye Hill/Underwood pits.

Is there any way I can access personnel or other records for those pits between 1820 and 1950 to find out which pits they were at, when and other information?

Thanking you in anticipation.

John McCullough
