My father Rod Walshaw worked at Mosley Common Colliery - I need some photos and memorabilia to make him a wonderful birthday present

Hello there, I wonder if you might be able to help me. My father Rod Walshaw worked at Mosley Common Colliery before its closure in 1967. He has a big birthday looming this month and I am hoping you could help me to find some decent photos and memorabilia that I could collect and use to create a wonderful birthday present for him.

I would be grateful if you could contact me with any useful ideas or suggestions.

Kind regards

Nicola Ward (nee Walshaw)

Bradford Pit, Manchester

Hi
Like many "salt of the earth" folk, I too have generation's of colliers who worked between at Bradford, Radcliffe Pit's in Manchester, (mostly Bradford, Manchester), fom early 1800's to WWII.

My Gr,Gr,Grandfather Richard Whitehead worked all his life at the pit, starting at 11yrs old (mid 1850's) right up to his death 64yrs!! later, still working as "Labourer at coal mine, 74yrs old"(census) at Bradford, His Father, John & 4 Brother's all worked at Bradford pit:-

  • William 58yrs service
  • Thomas 48yrs service
  • James 36yrs service (killed at pit)
  • John 42yrs service (poss. also killed at pit)

All William's son's spent all their life working between Bradford & Radcliffe pit's:-

  • William jnr 26yrs service, (killed)
  • Richard 30yrs+ service
  • Thomas 30yrs+ service
  • James 40yrs+ service

Thomas's son's also at Bradford pit:-

  • James at least 30yrs service
  • Thomas jnr 20yrs+ service, (killed)
  • John 40yrs+ service

My Gr,Gr,Grandfather Richard's 4 son's followed in the tradition:-

  • Thomas 30yrs+ service
  • William 30yrs+ service, (killed)
  • Fred 30+ yrs

Walter, my Gr,Grandfather was killed in the mine 7 Feb 1910, he was thrown from a wagon. Sadly his wife, my Gr,Gran spent most of her life as a widow, my Granddad was only 4 at the time. These are not the only Whitehead's to serve at Bradford Colliery, there are many more (poss. 20+); unfortunately too many to list.

So as you can Imagine, with a total of 549+ years sevice between them (many killed at Bradford) I am longing for a memorial of some sort at the site, to remember those men and women who, just simply lived-to-toil at the Pit.

Frederick Lloyd Ward

Dear Sir,

Fred Lloyd Ward is my great-grandfather - I am trying to trace my family tree, and was so excited to see him mentioned on your site. Do you have any information at all you can give me? Especially any photographs?

and also information on George Frederick Ward his son (my grandfather). If you can help at all, I would be deeply grateful. I have been searching for many years...

I also notice that someone called James Pitt has asked about Fred, he must be a cousin of mine! I would be really grateful if you could pass on his contact details.

Thank you so much.

Very best,
Emma Dean

Bill Ramsdale

Hi
Please can you help I would like to know if Bill Ramsdale is still around, my name is Norman Bailey I worked at Bradford Colliery as an electrician and Bill Ramsdale was my boss.

I was at work the day the engine house caught fire, and was involved along with many others in trying to restore contact with the surface and the bottom of the pit.

Thank You
