Looking For Info About My Great Grandfather, Osborn, Great Western Colliery
Hi I’m wondering if you can help me or point me in to the right direction I’m looking for some info or photos of my great grandfather. He worked in Great Western Colliery, near Pontypridd, Glamorgan in South Wales. His name was Osborn sea-bourne.

RE: Victoria, the only shaft I know of that once wound coal from three different levels

Fionn

Being from Monmouthshire, I can remember the Victoria.

Incidentally it was the only shaft I know of that once wound coal from three different levels.

Although a mining engineer, I find that an incredible feat of engineering but have difficulty in visualising. It would have turned the shaft into a shower bath !!!

Regards Terry

Tracing Pit Check numbers

Good evening. I'm not sure if you can help? I'm seeking to find out some details of my father who was a miner at Betws mine, Ammanford. I was wondering if miners had a specific number which related to them and if they did how could I find out these details?  I believe they were called pit check numbers. My father has now passed and I'm seeking to put a memorial piece together and would dearly love to incorporate as much of his mining history as possible.

His full details were Elwyn Charles Williams b. 26 Nov 1936. I would appreciate any assistance possible.

Many thanks in advance

Regards

Drift Mines in South Wales - is Eckington mine still  operational?

I have very much enjoyed your Mining web site full of fascinating facts.

As I also have a great interest in UK mining and very sadly as deep mining is coming to an end next month I wonder if you could give me any details if you know of any drift mines that are still working in South Wales and is Eckington mine still operational.

Regards

K Collinson
