AMBURY James - 1828 - 06/12/1828 - age 27. Gloucester. Was at work at the top of a coalpit when the wheel of the engine used for drawing up the coal suddenly broke, and the rope attached thereto entwining round him, threw him between the wheels and crushed him. (Gloucester Journal).

ATWOOD ? – 1796 - 23/07/1796 - age 14. Horse driver. Newton field, Somerset. John Harding whilst at work in a quarry at Newton field, undermining the bank too far, it fell in and crushed him to death. One Atwood, a lad about fourteen years old, who usually drove the horse at the coal pit wheel, being at his dinner, went to assist the old man and being near him at the time the bank gave way, his back and legs were both broken. He was taken to the Casualty hospital at Bath where he survived only a few minutes.

AWFFLICK Andrew - 1837 - 06/12/1837 - age 37. Springwell. Lord Ravensworth. Gateshead, Durham. Explosion of gas. 27 killed. Left a wife and 4 children.

AYLESBURY William - 1815 - age 16. Radstock. Radstock, Somerset. In the Autumn of 1815 – he had his back broken by some coal falling in on him whilst working underground & has never been able to quit his bed from that time. Buried 1st April.
