Like Joe Henshaw I despair at the ongoing attitude in this area to mines and miners in fact to working people in general.

We visited Lound once and the amount of material was marvellous I often wondered what happened to it. There were tree trunks which had been bored out for pipes (found I seem to remember at Shipley) This was a great thrill for me as these are illustrated in Agricola's De Re Metallica.

BUT if like me you prefer the book on your knee then Dover did a reprint of the translation plus illustrations - by President Herbert Hoover who was a Mining Engineer.

My father's ancestors mined in the Erzgebirge where Agricola worked and wrote his book (He was Mayor of Chemnitz) (Some of the gnome like figures could be relatives!!!)
